The frustrating thing about software is that we still haven't quite mastered knowledge transfer to the point where you can exclusively communicate through code all of the information about a given piece of software. As long as you are depending on the software, all that matters is what it can currently do, which you can learn from the source. If it's been so long since the original developers left, whatever they originally intended it to do is probably either no longer relevant or already known to all users.
