to be fair, anyone watching china cases emerge in january should have done the same thing. hindsight is 20/20 and all, but when china didn't lock their borders down right away should have been a major warning sign
i've been pulling out my max cash withdrawal limit from cash machines every day since we hit 10% down in the markets. of course cash is probably useless when a bank run does happen, but it does give you a sense of safety and is something you can simply redeposit.
I think this is common sense, but PSA: don't upload your photo to "test" online facial recognition systems, deep fake systems, or reverse image systems unless you want to build their datasets and be forever known to the world
I worked govt 10 years ago and this was 100% true then. Recently I made a (foolish) attempt to return to govt contracting and was shocked, SHOCKED, when they discussed Docker as a requirement and Kubernetes supported deployments as a nice-to-have.
with the exception of the very few people who know how to manage upwards, when you are the bottom rung of the totem pole org chart (and i'm not talking about developer or engineer levels), you have zero say over what comes down from 2 or 3 levels above you.
you still have to comply with the GDPR. if not, you can be detained if (e.g.) your plane makes an unwanted stop in the EU. (this assumes, EU brought a GDPR complaint against you or your company and you bothered to not respond)
I'm spending $375/mo for 8U, 12A, and 300mbit unlimited (3 x 100mbit bonded). The 8U gives me a GBe private network, 120 cores or so, 350GB RAM, and 20TB or so of storage.
The servers cost me $1200-$2200 each and I would buy a new one every quarter until I got to where I am today. I haven't added new hardware for almost 2 years, but its more than capable of handling my workloads (mostly web apps, lots of servers satisfying sql, ldap, etc dependencies). I burst (and failover) to all the clouds today.
