"Ownership" is something only the HN set cares about. The reason your average person hates app subscriptions the author relegated to a footnote: they mostly exist to trick you into paying for the app more than once.

Folks pay for all sorts of subscriptions, nobody cares about ownership, but when my mom finds out she's been paying $0.99/mo for a "countdown timer" app she used a few times over a year ago she swears off paying for apps for good.

Years ago, when he was still in NYC, I posted a minor technical correction under one of his videos on reddit and received a rambling essay-length reply plus an aggressive DM from him about how "people like me" are trying to bring him down, all at ~4am his time. That's not "filtering out what matters" it's evidence of paranoid mania, and that's all I see in his videos now.

I'm glad he's been able to turn this into a career doing genuinely good work that I agree with, but he is first and foremost a drama youtuber and that requires a confrontational personality.

If you can supply your own SSD, case, and 120mm fan the mainboard is "only" $3,149

On the other hand, dealerships would rather you keep bringing your car back for repairs and maintenance for 10+ years.

This was a fruitful conflict for the consumer until dealerships started steering buyers away from EVs.

If you do care about SteamOS, any machine with a reasonably recent AMD GPU will run SteamOS or a similar distro just fine.

I'm saying your contribution is outdated and irrelevant, and my primary intention in commenting is to label it as such for any passers-by who might think you're talking about the current state Immich.

That sad, I'm happy to answer your questions. I've run Immich in docker for 3 years with automatic updates through watchtower. Updates are frequent but require no effort from me and have never broken anything, nor is there an "update script" to fail. Nor have I encountered "corruption" at any point. I do back up the database and my photo library.

I'm glad you're happy with your solution, you can share it without disparaging other solutions you're unfamiliar with.

This is a good usage pattern if you're absolutely married to the file structure you have and/or want to keep using the files where they are.

Not really applicable if what you have is a google takeout dump. Better in that case to import all the photos and let immich handle them moving forward using a tool like https://github.com/simulot/immich-go

It's generous to assume all the difficult accounts you encounter are lacking mental faculties. Many are participating with the goal of wasting your energy.

This site in particular is infested with accounts that seem to have some real intelligence behind them, but they use that intelligence to respond to the most absurd and frustrating interpretation of your comments.

The shared fiction of "intellectual property" is crumbling. People who grew up with normalized piracy at the consumer level and industrialized exploitation of artists' works at the corporate level don't see the value of it.

Add to that the fact that anyone can simply do what they want with the bits on their computer, and sharing anything over the internet means giving them a copy of those bits, the technical barriers are gone too.

This isn't a value judgement just an observation.

> why would law enforcement and courts go along with it?

They don't want to deal with it. If someone has one of those SovCit license plates, you know pulling them over is guaranteed to result in frustrating verbal sparring match, which may result in the cop giving up (which is then shared as evidence for the SovCit movement's effectiveness!), or may escalate to a physical altercation.

Whether or not the SovCit practitioners understand that's what's happening is anyone's guess.

1990s SUVs were different vehicles than 2026 SUVs. A 2026 4Runner Hybrid weighs 1500lbs more than a 1996 and is 19 inches longer, 12 inches wider, and 6 inches taller. This is significant.

Activision Blizzard isn't even the most successful video game company at monetizing nostalgia. Nintendo easily holds that crown.

Between 2005 and 2015 the maximum score was 2400 instead of 1600. Assuming anyone who got <1600 during that period wouldn't admit it, you now have three well defined buckets.

But of course this is a lot of unnecessary steps compared to the usual method: length of work and education history +18 years.

> Craigslist has so far done nothing to prevent these

You could make your point without this lie. Craigslist moderators are both very active and quick to respond. Their moderation system is explained on the website. Try flagging scams when you see them.

A lot of people are functionally illiterate. Those people are online now. We have image, video, and sound based social media for them. They send each other videos and voice messages instead of texts.

Not only that, they're creating content for each other. People who can barely compose an email run TikTok accounts and YouTube channels and podcasts with audiences in the millions.

I don't even know if I think this is a bad thing. Sure, their education system failed them, but they need to know how to do things, and they often have information worth sharing. Providing video tutorials almost becomes a question of accessibility (in the a11y sense) in some contexts.

I have watched the rate go down and stay down on real live dashboards.

> Maybe if you're talking one entity and tens or hundreds of thousands of accounts

We are.

I'm not so rude as to call you "laughably naive" but I am speaking from experience and you appear to be considering a hypothetical.
