an immutable black hole might as well be a shredder. the OP in the reddit did precisely that. that money is GONE. locked away forever. it has not been transferred to anyone else.

Call me weird, but I'll take callbacks any day over async await.

If it goes too many levels deep, we have to ask what we are trying to achieve and perhaps consider a better approach (a specialized state machine? threads?)

tangent: why is the basis of most async functionality a form of polling underneath?

Why are interrupts not used? or are they?

source: epoll, select(bsd at least), isn't kqueue also like a multiplexed epoll?

And the US was already having issues in terms of STEM competitiveness...

I believe the term is "decline" or "decadence"...

I do not approve of publicly funding parochial religious schools, for example. This is a bad road to take. The would-be-theocrats don't even comprehend the damage their wish's fulfillment would bring.

I had the misfortune of attending such a "school" once and found it full of fake curriculi and it set me back a year at a crucial time. It was a total joke. I attended approximately 8 different public schools prior to that and after that, including some rather lousy ones, and all were superior to these weirdo cult luckily didn't have to spend much time in.

Public funding? public standards.

I have issue with the massive cost in other peoples lives you seem to be ok throwing away with such pronouncements.

We have to FIX our system, not make it worse. The reality of trying to force our entire civilization to commit mass suicide is a slow horrible intensification of all that is wrong with the world.

Please do your part to spread the word to your fellow nihilists. (by definition, not my opinion nor an insult)

energy usage is RISING with increased difficulty of proof-of-work, as intended.

except that bitcoin doesn't replace any traditional financial systems. in the real world, crypto holders also have banks and buy and sell cryptocurrencies with/for fiat.

very few retailers of any quality/price/repute sell physical for bitcoin, let alone denominated in fixed prices in bitcoin, even at peak hysterical hype (right now)

apples priced in bitcoin would fluctuate wildly and you wouldn't be able to count on being able to eat any given day of the week buying food denominated in bitcoin. the reality is that bitcoin is an unregulated security. It's a volatile investment and it's fluctuations make 'fiat' currencies inflation/deflation pale in comparison.

why not (get rid of) both?

When do we auto-organize as a species and ditch these primitive blame games and Mutually-Assured-Destruction madness such as competitive wasteful economics systems that cause people to drive hours to a place they don't like to "work at a job" doing something that is useless for the overall group and displeasing for the person doing it, simply due to dumb plumbing not organizing us. Maybe we should ask some machines how to run ourselves... (partially joking, but you know what I mean...Where is our group common sense and ability to hive-mind when we need it?)

I have no notion of what metaphor you are referring to. In real life, POW is a waste of electricity that produces nothing external to proving that CPU cycles were wasted, with an ever-increasing difficulty in the case of Bitcoin (getting worse with time, on purpose)

Think of it as some sort of elaborate Dilbert, rather. The essence of it is the dysfunction of corporate office life.

The fate of life on earth depends upon 2 corrupt fossil-fueled obstructionists. Why is Joe Manchin even in the Democratic party? His voting record during the Trump admin was atrocious, including his confirmation of Kavanaugh.

EDIT: Freudian slip, Tramp admin, Trump admin

Maybe I'm being terribly naive, but I don't see this from a maths perspective at all, I see this as about the shape of data and about memory allocation. If one increments pointers across an array of data, one should know the stepping size, for example.

How is this (programming/practical) side of the word "type systems" related to formal/mathematical "type systems"?

I missed that part

this is nuts.

essentially, serving a website to older devices that are missing the X1 certificate is broken now that the X3 certificate expired yesterday...

or?

(meaning, it's not a realistic strategy to tell clients to update/upgrade, and the cert-expired page makes you look dodgy, and mavericks ain't never getting a chrome higher than 67 and there are tons of people on that still, so...)

that will need to bootstrap first, and you won't be able to use such GC code in the initialization code for the OS.

GC code using Boehm would not be suitable for device drivers nor realtime code.

I can understand where making it available for higher level systems is desirable.

I could envision the kinds of alternative GC systems that could be inbuilt given the knowledge an OS may have about a process or a sub-system etc. Alternatively, Objective C settled upon reference counting (ARC) and this is superior to GC where it counts.

Where do you envision the GC bootstrapping and how do you see it interacting with virtual memory and your malloc implementation?

no Zig nor Nim nor D but you include 2 GC'ed languages as suitable for "low-level code"???

It just doesn't seem like there was a comprehensive plan from day 0.

Conflating:

1) the hideout of some rogue Saudis who architected 9-11, and the search for them.

2) regime change (we all saw those Bimini Buddhas blown up and heard about how bad the Taliban were treating women etc.)

3) occupation (hard work. requires physical presence)

into one big ball of 20 year mud that just doesn't have a tractable conclusion without a clear

1) plan

2) a ton more money

3) locals assuming power vacuums we create and owning it.

It was a failed state before the US arrived, arguably, and the Taliban represent a local power that organically had arrived at the stature it arrived at.

The NATO coalition had a limited mandate from most countries and it was largely driven by post 9-11 solidarity, and largely squandered any goodwill by the time Bush and Cheney invaded Iraq for no reason.

The Afghan adventure arguably broke the Soviet Union more than any occidental efforts. The writing was on the wall before the US arrived there.

If a child can see that there's no clear goal to the war, no clear point of winning that can be determined, then it's probably not very sound, conceptually.

(aka, if you invade a faraway country it can only be held by your people moving there and keeping a large physical presence there. See what happened to the Mongol Empire the minute the Golden Horde moved on... the only remaining vestiges were things of use to the subjugated peoples like the Yam and the Yass)

Basically, a muddled war with no clear strategy or even goal was only ever going to end this way...

needs to be coupled with subsidies for alternatives, transport (public, electric vehicles, etc) and with the knowledge that a poor person will drive that old diesel car into the ground, so give them an incentive to switch.
