Yes and this is awesome, but the comment I replied to, seemed to imply that all the problems went away since years and this is just wrong in my experience and can create wrong expectations for people trying out Linux again - just to get disappointed.

Well, Total Warhammer 3 for example did not work for me through official Steam, even though it should. It runs on the same computer on windows without problems. And with much more tinkering I surely could get it to run on Linux as well .. but I want to play games to relax and not get and solve new problems.

So ... all the windows games now run on Linux? That would be news to me. And I was just recently messing with drivers, kernels etc to get a working result, but in the end I still could not play the (officially supported) game on Linux that I wanted (opposed to just works on windows), so good for you that your problems went away, but please note, that other people might have had other experiences.

Ok, yes I do, but I think mega Tsunamies do pile up a bit more?

And the scenario in my head was many impacts in a close area - and the resulting waves then interacting with each other with turbulence.

Ordinary waves travelling through the ocean, mostly yes. But when 2 Tsunamis crash into each other, you can bet, that there is lots of turbulence and energy lost and they wont have the same height afterwards.

Well, but the basic assumption is, the more surface of the asteroid is exposed, the more will burn up in the sky. And that is pretty solid physic and should be valid.

Also most of the surface on earth is water. And one big impact would create a mega tsunami. And that is magnitudes worse, than many small impacts, where the waves will then even partly cancel each other out.

So obviously deflecting is the prefered solution - but breaking up as much as possible will always result in way less damage overall to the planet - but the more impacts you have, the more likely it is, that they will also hit densly populated areas. So this decision will be highly political, as if something goes wrong and for example china gets mainly hit - the final outcome might be worse.

"I've learned to pay close attention to what salesmen do, rather than what is said"

I've learned to apply this to every human being. Talk is cheap.

"to take down Palestinian perspective"

I sometimes also do other things than reading HN, but what stood out to me, was that I read nothing about the conflict here at all and anything related to it was flagged. Likely because it would evolve into a flamewar after 3 comments.

But is this really a solid fact? PG did not comment on it and all the other sources are anonymous.

"how everyone in HN just assumed he was "innocent"."

My impression was rather a overwhelmingly "wtf is going on?"

edit: I still don't know enough, to judge anyone involved

I think it is a bit tricky to get the incentives right ( since the bookkeeping people like to quantize everything). If you reward finding and fixing bugs too much - you might push developers to write more sloppy code in the first place. Because then those who loudly fix their own written mess gets promoted - and those who quietly write solid code gets overlooked.

So there is hope? Sounds good.

The current status seems to be, chrome is also way ahead of firefox with webGPU. They just don't have the manpower anymore, so I would not get my expectations up high and just use chrome for games and co amd be happy if webgpu comes to mobile FF at all. Or petition mozilla into rehiring some engeneers..

And with this concrete project I cannot compare, because on my mobile nothing loads, neither on ff or chrome.

"What these people don't explain is why all those other people with a virtually identical environment didn't become mass murderers!"

I am curious how you conclude that their environment is "virtually identical". I seriously doubt that. What is a paradise for someone can be hell for someone else and to the observer it looks the same.

So this would rather be an indication that the modelling is flawed.

And in the Unabombers case we have among ideological things the actual MKUltra experiment(I think no participant enjoyed it). A experiment designed to break someones mind. But to me it sounds you just concluded that he is evil and this wasn't a factor because other participants did not became mass murderers?

Side question, do you consider the designers of MKUltra as evil?

"There's often no point in attempting to find reasons for why someone is evil. "

You mean it is easier to just jail or execute them?

Short term, sure, but if we want to solve murder in the long term, or just enjoy a stable society, held together by free choice and not fear or domination - then there is really no other choice in trying to understand what makes people go boom, so we can prevent that.

The alternative would be living in fortresses and going out only heavily armed.

Also, do you have a clear definition of "evil" at all?

I don't and I think it is kind of complicated. Starting with the old paradoxon: murder many people while you are in a army and you are a hero. Murder them on the street and you are a villain. So some say, all soldiers are evil murderers (and leave open the question on how to deal with the situation when they come for them or their children). Some say states are the evil. Others say stateless is the root of evil, etc.

And the Unabomber believed he did god, as he tried to end suffering. From a pure philosophical point of view, I can accept that there is a hypothetical chance, that he might be right. But in all practical matters he was a crazy, dangerous fanatic (something I translate to "evil").

But the thing is, many people think actually like him, even though most don't act on it. But they might soon. So now is a time, when one can still reach them. But that only works, when you try to understand their motivations.

And understand why they got there.

"people who want to review bomb on the main site but can't."

We all have different hobbies it seems.

What happened to the good old punching ball, to blow off steam?

"It seems people are never thinking what happens if he is getting old"

You really think, that we people who do drive bicycles, do not think about cold and rain? We are the first to notice it first hand. So we do think about it, as we have to regulary deal with it.

The solution is adequate clothing.

But yes, I also own a car as I do not live somewhere with good public transport system. And I do know people who ride a bike in their 70s, but I am aware, that there will likely come a time, when I will be indeed too old for riding in the winter. But chances are, that by then I am also so fragile, that I might be too old for save driving also. Hopefully self driving is ready by then.
