I think the parent comment was sarcastic, no?

Honest and professional is not the same, to summarize. You can be both, but you definitely can be honest and unprofessional or even childish. Children are very honest for example.

If it leaks into independent medias, they probably will have a hard time erasing it. If they erase it before it makes it to any independent media, they have a good chance it will never surface again. At least that’s how I imagine it.

You’ll have to define “smartest”. Crime and IQ don’t really correlate (negatively or positively) as far as I know.

Well but the point was, that these are wiped from the internet. Sure it’s convenient, but I wouldn’t put it past the Chinese government - I’m sure they have erased quite a bit of uncomfortable facts.

I think you missed my point. What’s coming will obviously not be the middle age, that’s in the past. It will still be bad.

Let’s say the end of our civilization and going back to middle age or something like that.

I am all for it, but if a business is one of the few offering this, I guarantee you that their new hires will tend to have significantly more health issues than at other businesses not offering this.

It’s a bit of a chicken and egg issue.

I think the uncomfortable debate is not about skill atrophy as a general phenomenon (it’s happening anyway, doesn’t matter how much we debate it) but rather, _which_ skills are atrophying and if these skills are now superfluous/worthless or not.

If you don’t use a skill, it’s like a gene a species doesn’t need anymore, it will atrophy.

Is that bad and if yes, why? Skill atrophy is not intrinsically bad. I don’t know how to make tinted glas for church windows and I will never learn it because there are machines doing it now.

But I would for example think that critical thinking would be a catastrophic skill atrophy. As far as I know, there is no proven link though (and one would have to define what is “critical thinking” in the first place). Writing assembler without any autocomplete, I’m not so sure it’s such a problematic skill atrophy.

I hear this for EVs mostly. They do this in sectors where they want to become the monopolist, so they can then raise prices (not really criticism, everyone tries to pull this). I agree with you it’s not possible to do this everywhere at the same time.

Well but they were one of the lucky ones not living in terror for all the days past. Truly lucky, no irony here.

Which country is your debit card issued to?

Maybe it’s specific to Germany, France

Do you really pay online, like flight tickets, with your debit card, that works? I try regularly, it never works.

In shops the main issue is that the terminal they use can only read Apple Pay credit cards. If you’re using you’re banking app to pay wirelessly, it may fail to work with some merchants.

It’s not that they don’t want to accept it, the physical card would probably work (I don’t physical cards anymore), but the system is rigged to favor credit cards it seems.

You’re talking about scheme or interchange fees? In any case, it’s much lower. I think only business cards are still an exception in Germany. Interchange fees are capped at .2 or .3% and scheme fees are much smaller.

I use a German bankcard and it will cost less to the merchant, that is the reason credit card were refused for such a long time. Covid broke this, as contactless was preferred and bankcard were not available for payment on smartphones at the time.

Where do you live in Europe? This has simply not been my experience at all in France, Germany, UK, Italy and Spain so far. Online shops most of all don’t take debit at all and bricks and mortar shops will accept credit more often than debit. Again, my experience. And I prefer to pay with debit because I know the shop will pay less fees. I get refused at Starbucks, random shops in train stations, etc.

It used to be like that in Germany, it changed quite a bit. My debit card now is refused more often than my master card when I’m in Germany. I do tend to stay in large cities and not in the country side though, so my perspective is not a statistic.

But it definitely changed massively during Covid. Before Covid shops refusing _any_ card where still common (again, large cities is my spectrum) and debit card were accepted vastly more often than credit card.

It’s emotional, people like to have someone to believe in, who turns off their brains a bit. So annoying these pesky brains, always whispering rational things to do. So much more comfortable to just blindly trust into someone.

Funny how the above absolutely does not apply at the local scale. The same people blindly trusting Elon probably don’t trust their neighbors to even hold a parcel for them.

That’s not correction though, that’s perpetuation or acceleration of last 40 years‘ trend.

Not that I disagree otherwise though.

That is completely obvious, it’s like saying “100% security does not exist”.

I believe you are falling into the nirvana fallacy: No shades of grey, if it’s not perfect it’s as bad as the rest.

This is a very inefficient way of thinking as it is not possible to self host everything for most people, it just demands too much time.

Hence its is a perfectly valid approach in my opinion to looks at better (or, very often, “less worse”) SaaS solution.

If they states ZDR on a model, the likeliness of it leaking less data to some LLM data training is higher simply. If the business model of a company is built around a differentiator which is data privacy, that also significantly increases probability that data is not being leaked/sold.

It’s all grey, relative and about probabilities. Nothing’s perfect – another captain obvious thing.
