I sync my android phone to my laptop using syncthing. Works great, and the ignore patterns below prevent annoying access warnings.

Folder Type: Send Only

Ignore Patterns:

  Syncthing/**
  Pictures/.thumbnails/**
  Android/data
  Android/data/**
  Android/obb
  Android/obb/**

I've been under the impression that your VPN traffic is always "you". This could be a bad assumption tho.
