> In a place like the United States, there is a racial dimension to what is considered “universal.”
The Buddha of the Pali Canon explicitly and unambiguously rejected racial classifications; the Dharma is for all sentient beings, full stop. Vasettha Sutta (Sn. 3.9); Kannakatthala Sutta (MN 90); Assalayana Sutta (MN 93). From these and from suttas like the Tama Sutta (AN 4:85) and "An Outcaste" (Sn 1.7), the message is clear: one's birth (or social status) can neither exonerate immoral acts nor negate virtuous conduct. I find it notable that Chen pauses to point out how Western individualism contradicts the "Buddhist principle of no-self" but apparently never pauses to think whether she is herself reifying the concept of race beyond what the Buddha-word can support (race is closely related to concepts of self and identity, if you believe Intersectionality.)
Possibly the reason "white Buddhism" is an "unregulated market" is that in America we have the freedom to worship as we choose without the intervention of busybodies checking our skin color.
edit: I follow Theravada and recognize that most of the converts to Buddhism she is criticizing, follow an Americanized form of Mahayana.
Lovely to see the new Squeak release on here. There are some really exciting new third party things happening too, such as a visual Smalltalk editor called Sandblocks. I made a demo of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnbSocgf-xc
I'd like to say a few words about where I would like the game to go. Right now it throws everything at you in one big big bucket of fun, but I plan to have a series of discrete challenges and different modes to experience songs in different ways. For example a level with just mines and arrows and no robots might be good for learning. Also, one thing I'm working on is a "falling blocks composed of dancing robots" puzzle mode and you have to match 3 in a row of the same color/type. On top of that, a versus mode is in the works.
Yes. The stuff Xelf depends on can be installed through Quicklisp, check the xelf.asd file if you need to install them through some other procedure and the names are in there. Enjoy!
Hi Hacker News. For some years now I've been hacking on Common Lisp games. There is a great community on Libera.chat #lispgames and I thought I would show HN my most recent work in progress. Perhaps people will get a kick out of it, as Lisp discussions are often popular here. It is a rhythm game / shooter / puzzle hybrid that currently works on Windows and GNU/Linux. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, things are still in a relatively early state so there is plenty of room for growth and change. There are links to the Common Lisp source repo on the above linked page. Enjoy!
In Grindr there are check boxes for HIV status, an entry field for date of last HIV test, a checkbox for PrEP / Not on PrEP, and constant PrEP ads/message promos. I recently logged on after not much using the site during the pandemic, and a lot of profiles say Fully Vaxed etc although there is no checkbox as of yet. (edit: I am in a blue state with high vaccination rate)
I mention this because the vaccine debate has echoes of the PrEP debate, i.e. anyone discussing side effects of Truvada et al (even when pulled directly from Truvada website) or questioning the effectiveness of the medication, were shouted down. I think the culture is primed for exerting peer pressure to take a new mRNA vaccine (which you will still need to take PrEP with, because it will not be 100% effective).
I've never had any sexually transmitted disease. I use my brain to keep it that way, not a parade of antiviral cocktails and certainly not mRNA.
Let me guess: You will still need to take PrEP, because the vaccine won't be 100% effective, and you will be pressured through your dating app to do both.
