You have to love the ECAM. On the Boeings, pre 787 at least, we were trained to configure first, look and make sure the flaps, slats, and gear actually extended, then pilot flying calls for the checklist. Do-and-read.
Of course, if you have malfunctions or you've got too much shit going on (non-normals, traffic, wx, you're sleepy and screwing up, one or both pilots are not performing well), it would be smart to slow the situation down and revert to read-and-do.
It sure is nice to have an obnoxious horn and also GPWS that will start screaming "Too low, gear!!" if the pilots press on without the wheels down.
Smith is spot on with his analysis of why no number of mods and modules will make the 737 into a 757.
Here on HN I have ranted about the wobbly bobbly handling, obsolete hydraulics, and noisy crappy cockpit of the 73, versus the modern and comfortable 75.
Pay attention to what the article says about takeoff and landing performance. We used to load the 75 heavily for trips between NY La Guardia and Chicago Midway, or Midway to Washington National. We could NOT load a 737-NG heavily due to field length or climb limits. Boeing made a bad, bad decision to push the 737 instead of advancing a fresh design.
Just wait and watch. They won't abandon the 737 until one or two more are lost due to runway overruns or something else related to its shortcomings. That is WITH better than average pilots, all the sooner to happen with typical ab initio crews.
Withdrawal took way too long. It is unfortunate that Hong Kong legislators believe their purpose is to rule and manage Hong Kong people on Beijing's behalf instead of legislating according to Basic Law.
Two Systems or unsuppressible civil unrest: make a choice.
Hong Kong legal process? That's the top oxymoron of 2019. Things will get worse until either the people bend over like bitches or stand up and take charge.
Pay attention to large, sharp option orders: buying anove the ask or selling below the bid. Something is up when multiple millions of dollars are spent and the trader doesn't care about the price.
Well, I just have to shake my head and grin, considering the lack of comments as we surpass two hours of exposure here on HN. Yes, it is a silly high school essay question identical to the ones filling the China forums on Reddit and elsewhere. Still, no takers? No wumao either?
Think about this: the CCP is at the helm of all things of significance in the People's Republic of China. It is at the heart of the PRC's problem of totalitarian governance. It is at the heart of all human rights abuses violating international standards: ethnic cleansing, extra-judicial imprisonment, interference with the free exercise of religion and free speech, involuntary organ harvesting, a deplorable judicial system, torture, and general corruption.
The CCP is a criminal enterprise masquerading as a government.
Good luck clearing out the Reddit trolls, skinheads, and wumao. Why would a company pay for space in a septic tank, unless they really want the business of those users?
The comments in here are pretty solid. I would just add a couple of points:
1) Spoofing both localizer and glideslope signals will not be easy. The glideslope transmits from an antenna beside the runway abeam the touchdown aim point, while the localizer antenna is at the far end of the runway. It would be difficult to overpower both at the aircraft without being detected by integrity sensors at the airport (possibly even "near the airport" in countries concerned with spoofing). You can't just light up a plane with signals of similar strength; the spoofer must be many many dB stronger.
2) Crews are trained to watch the plane and overall situation closely. Not only do they want to see the needles centered, but there are checks of altitude versus distance along the approach. That's DME distance versus altitude, VNAV profile, and "reasonable" radar altimeter data.
3) Any instability caused by the spoofing is likely to trip the on-board integrity sensing and cause an INOP alert on modern aircraft. Also, a hinky-jinky ride on an ILS that's been crudely spoofed may induce the crew to execute a missed aporoach.
3) With (augmented) GNSS and integrated, multi-mode navigation on modern aircraft, the crew will see a deviation from the correct path.
4) The (enhanced) ground proximity warning system would detect a movement trend toward "terrain other than the runway."
Of course, if the target is not a well equipped, modern aircraft, spoofing the ILS may work.
Alright, that's my 2 cents as a radio and cypherpunk with multiple Boeing type ratings...
Have a wank to your favorite porn, then just walk away from it. Delete your accounts, delete whatever stash you have, and walk away. You need other things in life to keep you occupied.
Get into having fun with your wife - see what gives you some schwing as much as porn. You can find similar goodies, just on a different scale.
One more suggestion is understand yourself better. What the fuck is it in your favorite porn that gets you off? Nine tenths of it is symbolic: what does the porn actually stand for to you? When you know what really makes you tick, how do you integrate or exclude that in life?
Lastly, there is a chance that you may be a total psychopathic degenerate. Be careful, as you could destroy your family or yourself...
Greed underlies this whole stinking arc of events.
Indeed, Southwest Airlines has had an outsized influence in development of the B737-NG and Max. Thank them for the retention of that archaic cockpit, with toggle switches instead of alernate action and momentary action switches. One type rating to serve them all!!
Boeing painted itself onto a corner and poisoned its management culture when it stuffed itself with McDonnel Douglass. Oh, those ratty Mad Dog airliners: cheap, crude, long lasting. Those and new 737 variants are the perfect drug for junkie airlines operating on the bottom dollar.
He completely overlooks the argument that minors cannot make the decision to consent as they lack power and psychological maturity in the transaction, while the other party (the adult) has far greater power and maturity.
Cat and mouse indeed, but here we see that a GPS spoof can be detected and spoofs can be made more and more difficult to accomplish.
It will get down to a game of knowing the satellites better and better, in terms of their clocks, orbits, and drifts in those parameters. With the increasing precision of augmentation, spoofers will be hard pressed to keep up and precisely mimic more parameters.
Reason 56,224 why schools need to effectively teach science - chemistry, physics, and weather / climate. Storms are an aspect of heat transfer, and adding heat to a cyclone isn't going to make it dissipate. Also, the waters feeding humid air to the storm are still there, continuing to provide warm humid air.
Have fun with those nukes and fallout; enjoy your iodine.
