Your post and post history is a great illustration of what I've talked about before here on ycombinator.

Lots of your posts I can agree with, you're a reasonable individual. so why the huge blind spot when it comes to this topic?

When they colluded to force wages down, you defended them. There is absolutely no need for you to. And yet I know you will not stop even after this comment to you.

For what purpose have you written this abolute garbage bag of neoliberal-strung-together-with-gum-and-baling wire comment?

Your post has far too many platitudes and half-ideas and gobbledeygook. "anti success rhetoric"? how bout I classify your post in 3 words too? "Corporate apologist rhetoric"

not a single. sentence. has merit. it reads like ad copy or a poorly programmed bot.

You even put air quotes on "freedom" I mean, come. ON.

I try not to make too big a habit of calling people out, because that leads to poor commenting quality on my end but you sir have put a really, really bad comment on display.

I invite others to read each sentence, one by one, and see if they even follow.

I really enjoy the high level of comments here generally, unless there's an article that paints a tech company in a negative light. It's the one time I can always count on a large number of apologists showing up to defend them, and I think that bias is something everyone should look withing themselves and address.

When you get as big as Amazon is, along with the cushy tax breaks and cozy relationship with government that go along with that size, your decisions and business practices need to come under closer scrutiny, the end.

On a slightly different topic, the fact that the seller said he was held to binding arbitration made me very sad. I am super excited for these bullshit "binding" arbitration clauses to get shot down in court, they need to go.

Man, I just don't think that 'the majority' of people are 'doing ok'. The majority of people are not sick. The current healthcare model only works for people who are healthy, if you have an extended hospital stay, or god help you something like cancer, you could still be in deep shit (even with insurance)

With our current system epipens are like a thousand bucks

with our current system insurance can say no to treatment.

I am one of the luckier ones, with a good healthcare policy that pays for a lot of shit, and I still would prefer universal healthcare to the current system.

I don't want to run my care by my insurance company. I don't want to get 5 forms every time i visit, 4 that say 'this is not a bill' and one that looks the same as those but IS the amount i should pay.

I don't want to factor in what its gonna cost when i go to the doc. Just go to the single-payer model, take it out of my taxes instead (it'll probably be the same in taxes as my monthly insurance premium) and make it simple for me to get the care i need.

PS. my health insurance goes away when i retire, unless i wanna pay something like 1.5k or 2k a month to keep it going. My retirement plan currently is 'try to die quickly'

Financial opinion pieces are always a difficult read for me, as they always seem slanted in favor of the company and against any hint of regulations n such. This one seems to have a tone of "can google survive the big bad regulators?" to it that makes me... tired.

Consider this excerpt:

 stripes have sought to attack Google or other tech giants for various perceived sins,including being too big for the
 good of industry and consumers. Being Google has meant dealing with perennial regulatory and political nightmares."

"sought to attack"... "perceived sins"... "Being google... has lead to nightmares"

Is this language not considered to be pushing the reader's opinion in a certain direction?

On a related note, I would like to postulate that monopolies are inherently anti-consumer because they are anti competitive by design.

A monopoly as a rule breaks capitalism, which only works because of competition. the fact that harm must be proven somehow is a ridiculous notion and too high a bar. The fact that this is even up for debate is wild on its face and I just don't understand why we're here except for maybe we as a country have a collective case of stockholm syndrome towards the market that the government has shown it is unable to control.

Consider the other Google-related link on this very site. Google decided to break adblocking, and because they are a monopoly they can do that.

This and other anti-trust laws we've slacked off on enforcing is how we've gotten to the point where there are very few choices for the consumer in many aspects of life here in the states.

well, I can't speak directly to your situation, but my comment is mostly hinging on my belief that all the mandatory meetings and 'just one more thing' emails we currently deal with would suddenly be less frequent if management had to be mindful of their time and cost.

What I find sad about this (and other articles like this) is when the time comes within the article to lay out how to avoid burnout and stress, the list nevver includes ways to spend less time working. It's almost like an unspoken rule. I know that to recommend that is to take a chance with your livelihood but I really hope that we can at least stop blaming ourselves for the ridiculous work/life ratio we currently must shoulder to live.

Off the top of my head, there should be a moratorium on requiring email responses for non-essentials outside of office hours. I'd like to get rid of most salaried positions and get people paid by the hour. I've a sneaking suspicion that all the crazy hours that are currently "required by the times" would miraculously evaporate once employers were charged for the time they demand of their people.

I'm in agreement with you, and its refreshing to see that view expressed on this site. The guy shouldn't have to go so far to do what he wants with hardware that he purchased. We have come so far away from the old concept of ownership and have for so long dealt with lackluster consumer protection that this simple concept is a radical one to some.

It seems to me that there's a bit of a blind spot here on ycombinator, specifically for tech companies and developers that is, in assuming they are working in good faith.

I guess it's that most people here work in tech or with said folks so I get why; it's just the way ycombinator swings.

Speaking to the 500$ charge, are you saying that is a typical cost around the world for a MRI? Is there something about the machine's cost that justifies this or are you just saying that a 500$ charge is typical in the american system?

I agree with you in part, but in my opinion propaganda and lobbying are the problem because this is the source of the disconnect. When people got increased protections from the ACA, nobody complained. The insurance and hospitals deliberately shitcanned the healthcare marketplace and MOST pepole don't put much thought into why the mandated insurance became unconscionably expensinve, they just thought "Obamacare is worhtless" because that's what they were told.

I don't think it's specifically an American thing to avoid much thought about becoming really ill. It's an uncomfortable subject.

It doesn't make sense, but you have to (as a patient) make sure that the provider you're getting healthcare from is covered by the insurance company's (changeable) list. Its indefensible but it's reality.

I cannot wait for reform and I hope it hits before I get old and need it often.

As an aside, even the billing system is fucked up. When I get a receipt for covered care, it often looks a lot like a bill. This has to be by design. Its bad enough that I just ignore both "receipts" and bills and wait for the collectors to call me. That's how I know which is which.

Heck, all they'd have to do is release the toolkit à la Bethesda. Allowing players to mod the game is the best thing that shop ever did. Skyrim has an avid following with player-made mods still trickling out to this day, and it was released 7-8 years ago.

Indeed, as a once-heavy Warcraft and WoW player I can confirm that Blizzards story writing is to be actively ignored, even mocked. Great games, terrible writing.
