Coloring names with escape codes sounds like a John Carmack feature

It was in excellent condition other than that, so I don’t think age matters. Do you think it’s reasonable to buy a whole new car because the tires are worn out?

iOS 4 murdered my iPod touch too. RIP

Apple just works until it doesn’t. I have used Apple products for many years but a a perfectly fine 2013 15” MBP dying on me because of bad RAM has made me reconsider. That’s something that should be a cheap and quick replacement

In a real surround sound setup you can turn your head and look at the speakers when they make an unexpected noise. It would be cool if these headphones did that too

To me, that’s a feature not a bug

It’s getting better now that USB3.1 SSD cases are dirt cheap.

> on the downside, they doubled its price so for the non-Hollywood customer, there still isn't a desktop machine. Even 3k is much for a deskop machine

I think there were more benefits to an ordinary user to getting a tower in the past then there are now.

In the past even a hobby or prosumer photographer would see a big benefit from getting a Mac Pro. Nowadays an iMac or Macbook Pro with very normal specs can edit large RAW files without breaking a sweat.

The extra HDD bays on a Mac Pro were great because you didn't have to mess around with USB2 (cheap but slow) or FW (fast but expensive). Now you have USB3 (cheap and fast) or TB (very fast but expensive).

I guess that leaves upgradeable graphics cards, at this point it is easier to just get a PC or try a hackintosh build if you want a beast GPU for the latest games.

> There was even a time in the past, when a Mac Pro would start below 2k and consequently was very popular.

2006:

Mac Pro base model: $2,199 ($2,800 in 2019 dollars)

30" Cinema Display: $3,299 ($4,198)

Soundsticks (Of course!) $169.99

2019:

iMac 27" 5K base model: $1,799

iMac Pro base model: $4,999

USB C replaced MDP as the connector for Thunderbolt so I guess that part would get an update in any case

That’s a great anti-theft feature actually

> Kids in Japan lead carefree "be home by dark" lives up until late middle school and high school, when they start studying 4+hrs/day and sleeping <5hrs/night to prep for standardized tests. I don't think Japan is a horrific dystopia for teens but it's hardly the "let kids be kids" culture that America of yesteryear (apparently) was.

I think that time of Japanese kids' life is actually when they are the most free, they can goof off and do pretty much whatever they want as long inside and outside of school and no one will bother them (parents and teachers likewise), as long as their test scores are OK, that's one of the reasons that 15 is considered the start of the "best years of your life" (seishun).

I would say it's higher FPS due to the better GPU. It's hard to notice when you are using it, but if you use an older computer then one with a better GPU you'll notice the difference immediately

> We need foreign low skilled workers and they want to work, but we need to regulate that workforce so they don't undercut our native low-skills workforce by being unregulated and overwhelming the workforce with cheap unregulated labor.

That ship sailed some time ago to China or anywhere there is a sweatshop.

To win the game you must kill me: John Romero

He’s joking, it’s a reference to something his dismembered head says in the final level of the game

/edit: “To win the game you must kill me, John Romero”

This is actually what you are meant to do when you go to “purgatory” in MGS3. After walking up a river and meeting the souls of every single person you’ve killed that game, there is a boss who is already dead (so it is impossible to kill him).

The only way to win is to die and get a game over screen. THEN use a revival pill!

Wow! That is probably one of my favorite levels in Doom 2 as well. I love music too: a knock off version of Hangar 18

What an odd thing to feel bad about.

> People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you're not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you. You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity. Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It's yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head. You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don't owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don't even start asking for theirs.
