It's interesting that we are seeing a time when subscriptions are not preferred and usage-based billing is.

Pay-as-you go isn't a common thing in SaaS. For example, except for AWS SES, all email providers are bulk-subscription based.

Any recommendations for a trustworthy registrar?

Interesting. All 3 seems like they’re obviously going to impact quality. e.g, reducing the effort from high to medium.

So then, there must have been an explicit internal guidance/policy that allowed this tradeoff to happen.

Did they fix just the bug or the deeper policy issue?

I am not following the logic. If you’re a hobbyist, sure.

But the argument is if you’re using Vercel for production, you’re paying 5-10x what you’d pay for a VM, with 4gb.

So then what’s the rationale? You can’t be a hobbyist but also “it’s pay time” for production?

What do you do if not AWS?

workos is down too, timing is highly correlated with AWS outage: https://status.workos.com/

That means Cursor is down, can't login.

Tangential: Email spamming is out of control. My fucking hair salon wants me to add 2 factor authentication, and still sends me emails with an OTP. Login and guess what? They’ll send you moar emails to fucking confirm it’s me.

Guys, we are destroying the internet in the name of safety and security.

I want no GDPR bullshit, I want a simpler and risky experience. I am OK with losing my hair salon account and its history. Don’t care.

Maybe I should have listed Milton’s books. Just because professor is part of Ayn Rand institute, you're not arguing about the points presented in the lecture, but instead discarding his credibility by association. There is a massive amount of 200+ years of history of Capitalism that's difficult to succintly address here.

Here is Alex Epstein's Google talk about climate alarmicism that aligns with Shellenberger's post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6b7K1hjZk4

Shellenberger's book review (first one that shows up on google search) is just following the same tropes of Climate catastrophization. The article doesn't steelman Shellenberger, but instead reduces it down to "… yet bad science, strawman arguments, cherry-picking facts, and ad hominem attacks on scientists, media, others"; ofcourse written by folks at Yale "Climate Connections" blog.

Here are a couple of alternative reviews: https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/07/apocalypse-never-the-...

https://www.independent.org/publications/tir/article.asp?id=...

Climate arguments have no counter balance. The media routinely ignores the otherside of the equation and never provides a balanced view of how we can tackle it. Instead, the zeitgeist created by progressives for last 50 years is that we should depopulate, regress, and reduce quality of life and ultimately become state dependent. The same group of scientists and environmentalists that also ran the campaign against nuclear energy.

The west is shooting itself in the foot with socialism while Asian countries are lifting people out of poverty at an unprecendented rate.

Inequality is a feature, the pie grows larger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtJwAYJ9B08

Instead of lifting poor class upwards, the west wants to pull everyone else down. Reducing quality of life and regressing in every metric of progress. The future is in Asia, places like Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Singapore. Socialism is so easily captivating to average IQ voter class in USA, it is a fight every generation has to go through. Countless examples of failures won't convince people.

The likes of Greta Thunburg have changed their tune from climate alarmicism to just destroy Capitalism all together: https://twitter.com/ShellenbergerMD/status/15885879870379786...

Capitalism branding has been damaged by equating it with crony-capitalism which is what most people think it is.

Cloudflare is the last place I'd imagine it'd get political. Recent revelations were nothing short of shocking. Cloudflare is supposed to be strictly proxy and firewall, yet, they're bending over to a tiny group of activists.

SV corporations are spineless.

Well put. Welcome to contemporary political discussions. Objectivity is really scarce. The entire discussion goes down the toilet due to some form of 1) whataboutism 2) moral superiority complex 3) strawmanning 4) gas lighting. Add a dozen or so common biases and you've got a toxic brew of non-productivity. Furthermore, reconition of biases from a list like this [1] can be both good or bad. Bad in a way that it can be weaponized to shutdown conversation. Basically, everything you ever say (including this comment) would violate one of these cognitive biases, its a huge list. Feel free to use them as weapons! /s. There are also eggregious misuse of 2) which comes in the form of "For the children" or "Killing babies" or "For the good of the planet", etc.

Modernity has brought us closer to subjectivism than ever.

Sure, Manhattan and extreme dense city centers where Parking is limited and most people don't drive to it. Most of USA would be impossible to get to without cars. Don't call that car tax on "society". Society is much more than urban centers which have bigger problems than cars, i.e. Crime that discourage walking.

I've lived in a third world nation full of weavering motorcyles and two wheelers. It was a hell hole.

I hate cycling (bicycling). Hate every aspect of it. There are ways for me to get healthy but I always prefer driving over cycling.

The benefits are tremendous and not even close:

- Faster for most of America, unless you're in places such as Manhattan.

- Can use normal clothes, no need to specially dress up for it

- Can enjoy beverages, music and audiobooks, you can do that on a bicycle but not as safe

- Better quality of air to breathe

- Not going to get stolen

- Not going to get robbed

- Much much safer, modern automobiles are riduculously safe

- Better for the knees

- No need to worry about weather. Flip of a switch and it is awesome, instant heat or cold

- Luxury vehicles are incredibly comfortable

- Cost of cars + insurance + fuel is not a problem for me

- I really don't care about energy consumption, I am not going to give up modern QoL for some ostensible collectivist goal like cycling or eating bugs. We have unlimited source of energy (Sun), we're going to be fine in the future

- Much more fun (subjective). I love driving, especially manual transmision cars and performance cars with great suspension

Yes, welcome to operating a SaaS.

I was thinking a router that’s connected to Cloudflare network. Every device that connects to it is automatically on Cloudflare tunnels or Tailscale like VPN. And generally do the routing stuff better than ubiquity products (can manage your home router through their control panel from anywhere).

Remote devices would need a client installed on it to access the VPN, of course.

Yes. If they can’t build basic auth and make sure it’s secure, it sends quite the message.

Super annoying and borderline unacceptable.
systemvoltage

Well put, there is no moat. Corporate customers really don’t want yet another network infra if they have Cloudflare + ZTN offerings.

Cloudflare, please make a box I can buy and stick it in the closet with a WAN connection. Routers suck, it’s time to reinvent them. Also please don’t make them look like goddamn spaceships.

> Sometimes I feel like we could get a lot more done for free software with a tiny bit of pragmatism

This is wrong and disastrous. We need mostly pragmatism, may be a tiny bit of free-spirit and idealism.
systemvoltage
·قبل 4 سنوات·discuss
I reluctantly agree. While its great to have a reference point, there is a whole platoon of people who take this as a gospel. Speaking of gospel idiom, that's exactly what happened in the medieval churches – those who did not follow were ostrasized.

So, let's keep pragmatism, reality and wisdom above idealism.
