Shopify dev here.

One thing I didn't see mentioned much of this was discussed with their lead? Shopify is very open to people moving around to find challenging work. And Shopify as an org has done a great job (from my vantage point) creating a culture where people give and receive feedback. So hopefully their lead would be open to that convo.

I will also say though that some of what the author says rings true. Shopify gets you excited about the product problem, and less on the tech stack (is front end). The job becomes “how do I solve X for merchants” not “where can I find a cool React problem”. Sometimes solving X just requires Ruby work. And sometimes you’re excited to help merchants do X and care less about the tech it takes to do X.

The downside to this decision is there’s somewhat of a bias towards being generalists over tech stack specialists. Not completely but it’s there.

I personally have found lots of growth at Shopify. It maximizes mission, career growth and work life balance really aggressively. Shopify, honestly isn’t the place to maximize comp. It is a fun place to do great work and feeling like you’re having an impact.
