'customized systems (kernel)..FreeBSD..bare metal': Which is what most of us still do if we care about performance for a single application. Running openmp fortran code for both host/accelerator on oversubscribed vmware or vanilla kvm/qemu for a good laugh and a lot of pain. Simple systems approaches are best even when what you are doing is complicated.

Do you really think the python popen() workalike with optional shell inclusion is better than running in a shell? More secure perhaps? Easier to read? I forced a developer from my team who would not stop using subprocess calls (including $SHELL) in random new python scripts with hard coded arguments instead of writing a single shell script that could be reused. subprocess is a tarpit and is more misused than any other python function.

For what? Is it faster than (g)awk? How about sed? How about dd? How about any of the thousands of tools in userspace that you wrap in bash and are faster than python at the same task? Use the right tool is being lost in the 'you are too stupid to make a good decision, do it this way' generation.

You have one tool that you know well. I have thousands of tools that I've learned daily and I wrap with a bash script..except when I need python/tcl or C. Most of what I do in python/tcl/C is truly complicated, needs to be fast or use a data structure other than an array: as it should be. Most of what I do in the shell is as simple as the userspace tools and bash will let it be. Write the one liner above in python without importing a library.

This is the kind of ignorance (just use python for anything it's better + and discover subprocess(): it's great) that burns me up. Not so many years ago actively insisting that python/tcl/perl were to be used instead of a 50 line shell script would have gotten you kicked out of a serious discussion. You used the power and reflection of these languages when you needed something that didn't integrate cleanly with the rest of the unix toolkit and/or required sophisticated data structures, controls and abstraction. These days I won't even write python or tcl for trivial projects (including http API work just use curl/jq and bash/(g)awk). The number of shell one liners that just get things done in 30 seconds (rather than loading 5 libraries in python to write the same code) are innumerable. This is google thought policing the historically ignorant yet again. They are terribly opposed to the unix toolkit and C pragma that prevailed for 20 years...because they believe that they know the best way to make the world safe and productive. Self serving, smug rejections that serve the bottom line and coincidentally gain mind share for their products and approaches.

If you don't care about dealing with the headaches of enterprise/corporate and know what you are getting into then sure. Not for me. I've tried multiple times after 15 years in various startups (and .edu). The kultur of a large company is a deal breaker. I'd suggest looking into consulting or , if you can do it, find a large company that needs 'SME' and 'Fixer' skills (if you have those). You can then approach work offsite or telework varying your vista on the basis of what project needs your skills. Defense contracting has a lot of this type of work.

Authority is the problem...not standardization and portability. Everyone is willing and able to tell you the best way to do your work if you use their tools. Straitjacketing implementation in the name of order is a surefire way to dissuade people from using your tools.

I disagree with you wholeheartedly and without condition. Not only are you discounting how much time it takes to learn how to program effectively in a real 'glue' language you are high handed in ignoring the ubiquity, working archive and efficacy of a shell script. Not to mischaracterize but I find this type of attitude most frequently in 'lead' individuals with less than 10 years experience: typically 20's and 30's in age. I'm curious if this is your case?
