Allowing owners to choose when to install updates would address many issues. Most updates are uneventful, but I’d prefer to install them when I’m at home in my driveway rather than while road-tripping in a rural area, 90 miles from the nearest dealer, or rushing to meet a nonrefundable hotel reservation.

It’s less the NSA specifically and more civil service in general that you should worry about. Civil service is the opposite of everything that you love in big tech - it’s neither fast, nor efficient, nor progressive, the people you work with will not be “best and brightest”, the technology you work with will not be latest and greatest.

You know how anytime you see more then one cop they are always talking about seniority and benefits and how many years, months, and days until their next pay grade or benefit tier kicks in? That will be you every day for thirty years. I knew people who got jobs at NASA, their life long dream, finished their first project in record time - were informed the project was a three year contract so even though they were done they needed to fill the desk for the next two and a half years - so they left.

I would really like to see a practical open source implementation of this so people can start looking for ways to defeat it. Otherwise you know the police are going to abuse this.

Calling Airbnb was the right thing to do, I’d probably go the same route here - ask them what is needed to make the feedback acceptable, point out that the host doesn’t disclose the need for a cash deposit in the house rules and you want to warn people. That itself is worthy of discussion - anything not disclosed in house rules tends to get disregarded by Airbnb, and they generally don’t want money changing hands directly because they don’t get their 18%. Otherwise everyone would be listing their properties for $1 and requiring a cash tip on arrival. ;)

Airbnb is expected this year to make changes so prices are more transparent and this plays into that. Things have been trending towards the car rental model where you can rent a car for $1 a day but by the time you add in all the fees it’s closer to $200/day but you don’t find that out until the very last stage of the checkout. Airlines used to do the same thing then ~6 years ago they were forced to disclose everything up front.

I’m planning to list a place on Airbnb soon, am going to bake all the fees into the base price except for unauthorized guests, pets, and smoking - which are only there as a deterrent.

I assume anything regarding crypto is probably an attempt to get clicks, views, or financially naive tech people to part with some cash.

I’m equally suspicious about anything promoting rust. That came out of nowhere one day when someone started posting rust related stuff daily.

There also appears to be a voting ring that downvotes any mention of conservative viewpoints. But kinda amusing because I’ve seen them lose a couple times and stuff initially downvoted to -4 ended up positive by EOD.

The home button wasn’t removed until iPhone X, prior to that your only option was to replace the phone with another or subsequent model with the same button.

I assume the whole reason Apple removed the button was because the economics of replacing the main board over a two cent button didn’t work out - even when the people bought warranties. (Applecare)

It was successful, I’ve not had a unit failed because I kept pressing on the same part of the screen all day for years. Knock on wood.

Good enough I suppose. The camera on my iPhone takes better pictures by every metric but she swears they don’t look right to her, and she insists on taking photos either either her camera or with both. I am not sure what will happen when she can no longer get that model. I guess none of her pictures will look right.

Yep! I think she pays $4/month to keep the warranty going.

IMO foldable phones are a throwback to planned obsolescence. The mechanical wear of the folding and unfolding is going to win and you are going to find yourself with a new phone in a relatively short time.

Every iPhone I’ve had has succumbed to either the home button failing (which requires a completely new main board to fix) or the lithium battery swelling to the point the case bursts open. My current model has no home button and has lasted the longest, and is a few months away from its third battery - I have no intention of replacing it until Apple brings back Touch ID or eliminates the notch.

My wife has had the same Samsung phone for almost fifteen years, but it fails consistently every year and she has it replaced under warranty (how many of those things did they make that there is a two decade supply of replacements?) She gets a fresh unit with a fresh battery every year and runs it until it fails, then she spends about four hours on the phone with clueless support techs from Samsung and Tmobile, they point fingers at each other for a while, then finally agree to replace the unit. Usually it is the screen that fails but once she lost a bunch of irreplaceable photos when the encryption key corrupted, leaving her with nothing but a memory card full of encrypted blobs. Otherwise she has become really good at migrating to new phones when they arrive.

It was indeed his immediate and voluntary confession that did him in. If he had not snitched on himself he would have just been a person of interest. He was one of several people who happened to be using Tor on the campus at the time, but that doesn’t mean anything, the person making the threat could have been someone in LA or Moscow or Beijing just looking to cause mischief and having no connection to the school at all. If he had kept his cool he probably would have gotten away with it.

It would be nice, but I bet most of them would be hard pressed to dig up items from that far back even if they wanted to.

You can get SD cards/USB sticks loaded with ROMs from Ali Express if you want to pay money, there are torrents around that are completely free, if your a techie the there is probably someone in your workplace you can get copies from, etc. Nobody really cares as long as you are not making a profit. China doesn't care period. Nobody is going to start a two ocean war over fifty year old video games.

The .3x versions were the last ones before they put in abstraction layers for video and sound, which had a lot of benefits, but adversely impacted performance on low-end hardware of the time. On modern hardware I don't think it is really an issue, particularly for games from the 80s and prior. Raspberry Pi 4 works just fine.

The chances of your webpage being visible in 500 years is about nil. The browsers won't talk to it because it is not using the latest TLS. Your certificate will have long expired. Google will have removed you from your index because they disagree with your arcane viewpoints. Your host probably went bankrupt or decided not to support whatever setup is hosting your page. Somebody will have to translate it to Chinese when they take over. And so on. You probably have better chances printing it out on high quality paper. Good news is that you'll be in good company - Amazon will get disrupted, Facebook will fizzle, IBM will go back to making cheese slicers, and so on.

My wife is having huge problems launching her business because gmail keeps eating her incoming and outgoing emails at random. It is really tough finding reliable email w/ support since Yahoo and Google turned it into a loss leader. If you felt a blast of cold today it was because I suggested she look at Office 365 since so could get support, and I think that put out hell’s pilot light.

Different situation but same overall attitude. I'd send a polite one-line request asking to remove a specific message and I'd get back three or four hand-typed pages where the person was gloating that I was powerless to make them do anything, basically the the same thing I see revenge porn victims going through - though nobody ever tried to charge me to remove a post and nobody went the route of re-posting my messages to spite me.

It took years but all of my old Usenet posts eventually were removed. The people running archives tended to be real jerks about it - I’m pretty sure a couple of them got off on telling me no with long hand typed explanations, but in the end most of them were running archives on their employer’s equipment and when they switched jobs, got let go, or retired they couldn’t take it with them and nobody else wanted to maintain them so eventually the last copy I could find fell.
