There's probably a huge correlation between good parents and parents who would go through the hassle of bathing their child in broth only to have to clean all of it, and the baby (even if the baby simmers for a while.) Not that the soup thing is necessarily good, but it sure shows effort and good will which will probably translate in other ways.
We have a similar practice in Chinese culture, after a woman gives birth, they must take baths with ginger for a few weeks. My mother in-law actually spent hours cutting up enough ginger for my wife.

That's not necessarily true. Overzealous parents cause harm all the time due to misguided beliefs/efforts, regardless of how genuine and/or time-consuming they may be.

Ginger actually has physiological effects though.
