The lack of technical information on the site is staggering. Who will put that amount of cash with no clear specs shown right off the start? Or am I missing a button or section because I’m browsing from an ipad? Getting that more often these days.

I submitted the Reinkstone one since it had a photo of a big color image on the screen.

Honestly I don't find it that overpriced considering that it's a niche product, I expected something closer to $1000. I agree that they're light on the technical data though.

I don't really have a use for this particular product but I'm excited for any development in e-paper technology. I still hope that in the not-so-far future I'll be able to program on a decently-sized, decently-fast, decently-priced eink display.

DES (Digital Electronic Slurry) is a competing technology to E-Ink. It supports fairly high color depth and is relatively cheap.

I had heard previously on HN that there were competing technologies but I never knew of a concrete example.

Patents aren't the issue here, its not with e-ink. Its the lack of willing by the patent holders to license.

It might not be the only issue, but it is clearly part of it - if there was no patent in the first place we wouldn't be discussing their unwillingness to license.

The "someone in France" popup isn't even randomly generated. It's hardcoded in the JS source:
