I have been following his work (and social media discussions) since Black Swan, and it seems to me that the ideas are becoming stronger (to me) with time. The later ideas reinforcing and expanding on earlier themes. For example, Black Swan was about unpredictable and catastrophic risk, later Anti-fragility was about how to deal with risks including Black Swans, his work in progress (Skin in the game) is how to make systems more anti-fragile.
I encountered his ideas (10 years back!) at a time when my default way of thinking was very intuitive instead of systematic and analytical thinking (which many of my high-performing peers had developed over the course of engineering education). Perhaps because of this, I took to his ideas like duck (swan) takes to water. I never acquired a systematic(analytical) thinking approach despite being in academia till mid twenties though I could hack decent academic performances. It was in an engineering profession that I realized the advantage and importance of systematic thinking and tried to consciously develop it.
Strangely, the use of systematic thinking has also actually increased my appreciation of his ideas after a period of wavering doubt. The systematic (analytical) way of thinking is too seductive and it's successes too apparent that it appears far superior to my earlier intuitive way of thinking. However, I am gradually coming to realize that the intuitive way of thinking has a deep logic of it's own which is not visible or may not even be decipherable. It's logic can only be inferred by its effect which ofcourse a critic can also be ascribe to luck!
Interesting prediction, glad that the author puts it upfront. Based on conversation with people in the loop, and latest trends, it is certainly plausible!

I think this provides an excellent theoretical framework to think about types of people in a corporation, the fundamental objective of the corporation, and seems to explain many behavior of others.
OTOH, I still think this is just a framework and may not have any connection to actual reality.

I disagree as well! At best, it is an opinion piece, and the arguments mentioned makes lot of sense. Eg, Apple's strategy of pushing refurbished phones makes lot of sense to apple given the numbers mentioned. But it comes across as insensitive to vocal commentators in india.
"And if all this isn’t enough, Cook has another situation on hand. Apple wants to sell refurbished phones because it has a carefully thought through strategy. But the Indian government won’t let it do that."
It seems the article has lots of insights, but wether they are correct is another matter.
Thanks for asking this question. This would be a very common problem, and I am struggling for a satisfactory solution. Any response from people who have gone through this would be really helpful!
Same issue here. I actually upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7 about 3 months ago. Then 3 weeks back, an automatic update, and lost both Wifi and Wired connectivity.
- No use updating drivers (they are not available for Win 10).
-Cannot go back to Win 7 from System Update (since that option available only for a month).
-Since Win7 is pre-installed, cannot even download a CSO image file with my product key!
I am still lost about what to do. Thankfully, after a complete restore to first Win10, I have wired connectivity back.
Hearing a lot that infact dropping gold standard was stupid, and it matches with humanity's tradition too. Could anyone explain why gold standard was a stupid idea? Any link would be helpful. Thanks!
Perhaps some sections of interest to readers here would be (from the preface):
Part VII, “Application Areas,” comprises articles on
connections between applied mathematics and other
disciplines, including such diverse topics as integrated
circuit (chip) design, medical imaging, and the screening
of luggage in airports.
Application areas of Applied Math sounds funny though :)
Thanks!
Reading and digesting this as a 2nd career developer. NOt trying to manage others but become good from average. I feel the most important take-away for me is this:
The difference between the learner and the wizard is that you expect the learner to make a lot of mistakes. The system as built may be awkward or not handle error cases properly. That's okay. Training research shows that if you get speed now you can get quality later. But if you don't get speed you will never get quality in the long run.
and related
A person won't retain proficiency at a task unless he or she has at one time learned to perform that task very rapidly. Learning research demonstrates that the skills of people who become accurate but not fast deteriorate much sooner than the skills of people who become both accurate and fast.
Went thru an e-mail yesterday from Amazon that my wish-list book by Seneca:Letters from Stoic was on discount, but couldnt buy it on time. BM Phenomenon again!
Interesting to see how Flipkart and Amazon go about overcoming these challenges. One example, from story posted by skbohra123 :
"Logistics: On the logistics side, Amazon India had launched a pilot program to test in-store pick-up service in Delhi and Mumbai in association with BPCL’s In & Out stores. Shoppers were provided the option to select In & Out as the pick-up of point of their Amazon purchases during the checkout process.
This pilot was later extended to Bangalore in the following month, wherein it allowed customers to pick-up their Amazon purchases from local kirana shops."
