>Prepping
About 10 years ago I had a period when I read some prepping literature, mainly fiction. Now that we live in a pandemic I'm amazed how far off the mark all the prepping novels were. Generally the premise of such a novel is some type of apocalypse. The bad thing strikes, humanity just takes it in the chin, and the valiant preppers have a field day saving themselves, and in some cases taking care of their communities. Reality turned out so different. If anything, my curiosity in the prepping literature went negative.

Ah you are right! I've not read books about it, but I've seen movies. It's pretty much the same plot.
Pretend you are 80, you have 15%+ death rate, and large cripple rates.
Currently most are taking it on the chin and just dying.
Which 80+ are prep'ed? So food, ability to online shop, Netflix, video conferencing, medicines, hobbies.
Most have none, so are going outside and dying.
The novels are just not true for your demographic this time.

True.
Good stuff. Always found trend spotting fascinating. And sadly the main #trending pages end up with useless noise stories on their top trending topics (e.g. memes)
Have you checked with other trend services to find any interesting discrepancies that could inform how your product differentiates?

Nope, we spot our own trends from different sources and do validation that way.
For example, if our tech founds on a forum that "adult coloring books" are trendy right now, it will double-check by checking Amazon and Walmart, too.
Then obviously, it checks Google Trends, too.
We don't stop there. We have a 4-stages process: source > analyze > enrich > forecast

1) Loungewear Because of COVID-19, people are self-isolating at home and they are looking forward to donning their finest loungewear for another Netflix binge-watch session on the sofa. Loungewear had an increment of over 90% in search interest in the last days and it's steadily growing.
2) Prepping Prepping often refers to the act of preparing yourself for life during and after an apocalyptic event. It has always been part of the survival niche, but now it's getting more and more attention even from non-believers because of the coronavirus emergency.
3) Composting ️ People are all about composting now. Why? More and more cities are shutting down drop-off services because of the urgent steps required to bend the curve on coronavirus transmissions, like social distancing.
With more people at home, there's also a growing interest in gardening, which is obviously related to composting.
4) Barbell weight set ️ With more and more people at home, gym equipment is getting a ton of interest. Barbell weight set registered a +22% increment this month! Also look keywords like weight plates, resistance bands, dumbells, home gym, no equipment workout, tonal, p90x, peloton. Aside from this, solitary fitness activities are also trending upward. For example, look at "hiking".
5) Calming care In the pet category, I would get in the game of selling everything anxiety related. For example, the demand for "dog calming care" has been growing steadily over the last 5 years. It could be related to separation anxiety, but also from fireworks anxiety.
You heard about these trends here first! =)
