Add on top of that Russia - Turkey relations were severely damaged and they legitimately saw Russia was actively destroying their economy at the expense of their own. Then Turkey shot down a Russian fighter at the Syrian border. NATO saved Turkey's bacon that day. If Turkey wasn't in NATO they probably wouldn't exist today.
Turkey then spent considerable diplomatic effort trying to rebuild relations with Russia. Then ukraine happened and Turkey smartly went neutral. No naval and air assets may go through Turkey anymore. Russia can no longer operate in Syria, nor leave. Guess those russian soldiers get to starve?
