Nofollow links make total sense when they lead to parts of the site that don't need indexing, like a password reset link. Another case is interactive pages that are expensive to output, with various controls as links (not buttons).

The nofollow attribute just has to be used where it makes sense, and usually it is not content pages.

Actually in the password reset cases you should use noindex.

In the case of the expensive page that you don't want bots crawling, the only sure fire way is to block bots based on the user agent string.

Google both follows and indexes nofollow links.
