I don't understand - why would the "anti woke" be terrified of criticism/demotion of economics? Are you trying to say most of them derive their personal morality from questionable economics teachings?
I think the author would agree about the provenance of economics. A degree from one particular school imbues a set of virtues; the Austrian school, the Soviet schools.
I think the author has seen that in philosophy. Starting with, or coinciding with Derrida, maybe some philosophy departments are analytic whereas others are continental.

Universities should just pick camps and clearly proclaim which side they are on. If you want to do critical theory studies at a university which doesn't believe in objective truth you pick a University on that side.
If you want to study areospace engineering, or biology you go to one of the schools on team objective truth exists.
Or I guess you could do an electrical engineering at the objective truth doesn't exist university although I have a feeling enrollment might not be that high.
This process would be self correcting based on the quality of output of those universities over time.

So, with “disintegration” in the title, that’s what the author is expecting. Some departments which used to have a profitable relationship with hungry philosophers might miniaturize a philosophy organelle. Quantum physics, music and art, for example. I think this is what he means by returning to pre-Enlightenment.
At an academic symposium somewhere someone said something silly, now we must bifurcate our universities; perhaps our queer theorist is right, objectivity has truly been deconstructed.
MIT has done just that: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34132152.
I am in the choir this article is preaching to, but "disintegration of Academia"? Please. Deconstructionist arguments have been taken up as weapons by minority groups and agitators playing power politics, we all see the game they're playing, but they're more like BB guns than real guns - annoying but not actually dangerous.
Well, I hope the author lumps the study of economics into that, a discipline that has a far longer history of tribalism/subjectivism with the addition of pseudo mathematics.
If you think about it, economics provided the original model for subjectivist study in universities. Nobody from the "anti woke" crowd seems too excited by that though, like the author they are terrified that their personal morality might not be quite so moral after all.
