Ask HN: What will happen to social media?

Thank you for a legit insight about video. My guess is changing to micropayments, like you should pay 0.01$ or less to be able to write one comment, also the price could be higher for participating in controversial topics.
Oh no, that sounds terrible.
Internet should be open (for authoring, for participating). Paywalls destroy everything.
People should invest in anti-gen-AI algorithms. And make AI filters new infrastructures of Internet.

The issue with the paywall is that this is hard to have enough good bank card to be able to pay without such an ugly thing as payment processors. Also any bank cards I have experienced can not pay anything less than 1$ without absurdly high comissions. If the paywall costs you literally less than 0.01$ with all kinds of comissions and having no authorization which means that the government can neither read your webpage purchases nor block them - would you still call it a paywall?
I am sure that even sub 0.01$ payments will effectively filter 90% of the spammers.

The problem is, if the price is too low, it won't stop spam as long as their creators can earn more than (or equal to) cost.
If it is too high it will significantly prevent participation from humans, because most of the content sent by real humans on social media is not much different from spam...

Perhaps we will return to meeting in real life. Physical presence probably has a few decades left before robots are indistinguishable from humans
Hopefully! that will be the comeback of blogs and personal websites.
Dead internet will soon be a reality with AI agent zombies flooding it!
I am surprised no one is talking about it.
I guess the bots don't want to talk about it.
Soon social media is going to be filled with bots posting content, and other bots commenting, re-sharing, and upvoting content. Quora already has an "Assistant" answering each and every question.
I am sure I will not stick around to scroll through such AI generated content.
With image generation models, even instagram is not going to be spared it seems. However, I am optimistic that video still has time. Most popular video contents usually have a human element with some presenter or subject doing or saying something interesting which is still hard using gen AI.
