Are people actually doing this for any serious production systems?

This doesn't give me confidence in the process. Don't get me wrong, Debian (and derivatives) are great systems, but the lack of any real rollback option and notes like this right at the beginning of upgrade docs just scream "don't do that, just do a fresh install". Which is probably a good advice.

Yes, we have some older pets-not-cattle VMs in production that we upgraded over many (5? by now) different versions, never had any problems.
Then again its VMs, so you get easy snapshots as a rollback option.

As profit on Debian you learn how the package manager works and you become confident using its low level tools when things break.
