Life is more than your day job, and depression is a hole only you can dig yourself out of. Food for thought, maybe it isn't your niceness, it could possibly be that your misery is bleeding out; it could be depressing being around depressing people. Good luck and really think about how temporary your life already is, don't miss out on it cause of the struggles.
I love it, I feel like a saw an article linked through hn about the fact that so al-queda and extremist groups supposedly want exactly this to happen. Something along the lines of how this was a strategy for recruitment.

I second this, I was actually recently being asked about industries, and the quick answer in retrospect is the above. New Challenges all the time, even if you have a pattern that solves a problem there's always the minor details to figure out.
If you like history at all, the Robert Greene books are awesome. 48 laws of power, 33 strategies of war, etc... They break down each lesson and their reversals with historical examples.
Yea, your probably not a polymath, I think now a days it isn't really possible. Back in the day leo da'vinci types had less to learn to "master" fields in those days.
