As a consumer facing brand, this may be a problem. But as a technology for building custom social media services, I don't think this will harm its adoption at all. I know of two examples already of people modifying Mastodon to build rebranded "alternate" social media networks (Gab and Truth Social,) neither of which still refer to posts as toots to my knowledge.
Or for a more concrete example, look at how both Republicans and Democrats are treating Julian Assange. Investigative journalism and whistleblowing are under attack by all political factions and by the justice system, today. We cannot treat anti-free-press authoritarianism in the West as an "early stage" or tomorrow's problem.
It seems that in both cases the accused was acquitted or the investigation against them was closed. That's hardly a reasonable indicator of innocence though, as just like you said above, powerful people can often make up excuses to get away with crimes and corruption scot-free. You might be entirely right that one example really happened and the other didn't.

No, we can't conclude that yet. Gab modified their instance heavily from Mastodon code over several years. People are also pointing to an addition made by Gab, where an SQL query is used without input sanitization, as a possible culprit for the breach.
