Great observations! I've no idea what the sales numbers show for smart home products. To me they all represent more effort to manage things I'm already happy with as is. My fav lighting gadget is the dimmer switch, which got introduced to the consumer market in 1959!
You did nothing wrong. Change is one of life's greatest certainties and right now this industry is going through an epic, tsunami change. You're an innovative self starter. Ignore the negative noise about fear of the unknown, and any self doubt too. Stay enthusiastic and curious and opportunities will appear, maybe not in the forms you'd expected though so stay open-minded too.
Last night over dinner my companion reiterated why so many are opting out of breeding these days... The cost! Children are actually priceless so if they require budget tightening, they're still the better deal. And in the case of a true lack of funds, hey, the more children the bigger the SNAP and other public assistance payments are.
