Honestly, with the AI slop of resumes, I applied to dozens of jobs, and only got a callback to ones I had either a recruiter for or direct connections to, after 20 years of experience. Because I didn't have a big fat "worked at google for 10 years" on my resume. And I'd like to think of myself as someone who can take a very bad situation and make it look smooth.

Yuuuuup.

We once had a cloudflare outage. My CEO asked "mitigate it" I hit him back with, okay, but that'll take me weeks/months potentially, since we're tiny, do you really want to take away that many resources just to mitigate a once every few years half the internet is down issue?

He got it really quickly.

I did mitigate certain issues that were just too common not to, but when it comes to this sort of thing, you gotta ask "is it worth it"

Edit: If you're so small, cloudflare isn't needed, then you don't care if you go down if half the internet does. If you're so big that you need cloudflare, you don't wanna build that sort of feature set. The perfect problem.

The most terrifying thing is there will be a trump-government representative in the governing body.

We are truly looking at 1984 as a blueprint not a warning.

Counter thought:

Rent is going up A LOT every year. My parent's house in a similar area is not, even with extra taxes, it is far lower than what I pay.

They fix up something, its fixed. We have a problem -- it will be fixed in the cheapest possible terribly looking way.

And rent keeps going up. All the time. By so much.

There's flexibility in it when you're in your 20s. But in 30s and 40s its terrible.

The problem of authoritarianism is the preparedness paradox.

They are less prepared for problems. And so suddenly problems happen all the time.

But when there are no problems... Things are going well for the average person.

> Maybe it's time for a third large phone OS, whether it comes from China getting fed up with the US and Google's shenanigans (Huawei has HarmonyOS but it's not open) or some "GNU/Linux" touch version that has a serious ecosystem. Especially when more and more apps and services are "mobile-first" or "mobile-only" like banking.

This makes me laugh. Not at you, but at the cycle. This was the convo years ago when this was possible, but getting consumers to trust a 3rd party like PalmOS (which was actually pretty darn good compared to android) is practically not possible.

To note, staff position requirements are very high. One because they cost a lot, and two because they're looking for proven people.

Going from senior to staff or principal is a huge leap.

Personally I have no idea how people expect to get staff at 6 years of experience. I'd expect a minimum of 8-10. You just need experience there. Below that you better be a genius.

its more than a shame. emoji, gifs and images are a core part of teens' communications (I have one, I know all too well), and iMessage's green bubble is also a guarantee that these things won't work, so its not just a shame, it is a hard road block.

Fortunately a lot of teens moved to discord.

Ad nauseum solves this. Sure you get tracked but you also send all the wrong signals.

ah yes, thanks for that.

Yeah I've been looking into the cobra effect in the current youtube adblocking thingy... It certainly got me to use primarily adnausium which fixes the problem since ads are served, just... you know... maliciously clicked on.

I would say blanketed bonuses are a bad idea, or I'd make some partnership deals with other engineers. However, this was a pretty clear cut "give this man a medal" situation, in a clearly toxic company. This is why my reaction is what it is.

There was an old thedailywtf post about how a company thought they'd incentivize fidning and fixing bugs. Suddenly every engineer had a QA buddy, and they'd make like 50 spelling errors, which QA will find, and enigneering will quickly resolve. They took down the bounty within a week.

Lol, if I wasn't given a raise, I'd agree to everything, and at the start of my presentation say

"hi everyone, I wanted to walk you how we got to a half-a-million dollar savings, basically I spent a day looking at how terrible the original infrastructure was deployed and removed a code test feature that was causing the problems. This was just complete oversight from every aspect of the development, management, testing, and everything. Overall this code is as bad as it can possibly get, and we just launched it. And basically I was told not to say any of this because it makes everyone look bad, so I was to roll this out gradually to make it seem like managers were doing some sort of work."

Then drop the mic and walk off stage.

Honestly the amount of give-a-fucks I would have lost would have been a lot. And this is coming from someone who's done this for almost 2 decades and cares about his job because bills to pay, kids to feed.

I don't think this point gets plastered everywhere in the entirety of the world enough.

Most humans don't want to shoot other humans. The few who have murder fantasies do, but other than that nobody wants to take a life. The concept of just arming everyone isn't a positive nor even a remote solution.

so... rich people getting blood transfusions from young people was legit? dangit! its like the cure for aids, all you gotta do is inject a liquified $500,000 (south park if you haven't seen it way back in the day)

in the past this was the only way, now there's an easier way, but easier is not necessarily better. But easier is the way most would choose.

Biggest issue I'm seeing is people in the digital ecosystems (even myself) often lack in high quality friends who they regularly see. I noticed how I would form bonds with people over a game, but as soon as we both move on, we effectively just fizzle away and lose friends.

Meanwhile my daughter is having similar issues. She has more closer ties to people online than in the physical world, which means that when we want to host parties or she just wants to do things, she's unable to invite her closest friends because they may live on the opposite side of the continent.

Now the shortcuts to social gratification are VERY easy, compared to before, and because of this, it is easy to spiral into the shortcut path, and not meaningful long term relationships. And so now more than ever it is important to be very intentional about keeping up friendships compared to before where you simply had to do things to create bonds. Even the "loners" would find friends in comic book stores, but now that moved online and less regular or connected.

I don't think it is social media. I think it is just the ease of remote communication. I am sure there was a similar problem when the telephone came out because people could now keep in touch with friends outside their neighborhoods. Hell at this point I only know 1 non-family member in my neighborhood who I interact with at all.

I won't argue your point. I think Google should remove those.

However it would be nice if Google at least made an attempt to explain to people why they are banking them. And an appeals process.

Right now this is basically the wild west with if sherif says it, it is reality. We need more of a due process.

For what it is worth. Key repeats as described is a hardware problem. I had the same issue with the letter H. Either duplicates or a random H mid-whatever.

Every single macbook ive owned in the last 3 years has had some defect. Either a dead motherboard. Broken keyboard. Or both. Basically it is build like a piece of shit.

Had I any option I would get a cheaper better faster windows pc in a heartbeat. Sure it'll be 0.5lbs heavier. But by god it won't have that shitty giant touchpad that won't let me type without fucking up my wrists.
