Language or platform standardization for data science is over-rated. Most often, analysis is performed remotely, and resulting models and other work product are deployed, "frozen" on production platforms. There is seldom need to match the data scientist's tools to match those of the organization.

This article indicates that the Super Mario Brothers game for the Nintendo console (1987) was the original title in the Super Mario Borthers franchise, but it's worth noting that there was at least one earlier game, Mario Brothers (not "Super") for the Atari 800 (among others?) from 1983.

According to the BLS, workers earning the federal minimum wage or less represented only 1.4 percent of all hourly paid workers in 2021. Taking into account all workers (not just those who are hourly paid), this small fraction would shrink even further, so I wouldn't expect them to have much affect on the overall unemployment rate.

"How AI reduces the world to stereotypes"

I find this interesting, in that there are any number of A.I. systems other than deep learning and large language models. Contemporary usage in the nontechnical press, though, uses "A.I." to refer specifically to DL and LLM, especially when they are generative. From this perspective, the above title uses a stereotype which ignores other A.I. technologies.

I agree regarding training: Police officers are expected to deal with all members of the public, some of whom have disabilities or other challenges which should be accommodated accordingly. Having enough police who are sufficiently trained would seem essential.

The variation of the "important variables" lists across model types is interesting. While logistic regression trails a little in test performance, the other two are roughly equivalent, yet all three lists are rather different.

What of the unemployment provoked by legally forcing the price of labor higher? Think about it: WHen the price of something goes up, do you buy more or less of it? One might as well call the minimum wage the "ceiling employment".

This is more of a challenge with newer, larger technologies (deep learning and large language models). The operation of older, smaller scale A.I. systems (rule induction, tree induction, [smaller] neural networks) are much more clear.

I've been working in A.I. and analytics for over 30 years and agree that throwing up one's hands, complaining about how "we can't understand" what A.I. is doing is a bit theatrical.

I've seen published estimates of statistical efficiency for a few test distributions for the trimmed mean, but not the Winsorized mean. Can anyone suggest references on this?

This is a great way to exercise programming skills in preparation for "more serious" projects.
