The most useful part of Jellyfin is on-the fly transcoding to whatever bit rate I want at any particular time, no matter where I might be. I've watched stuff off my server on a train with terrible connectivity by setting it to 360p. If you only watch at home, then it's probably not that useful to you. I also like all the library features and tracking my per episode watch history for shows.

I'm not sure why it wouldn't work with the apps? I have my jellyfin server behind a CF tunnel and I can access it in the Android app by my domain.

Is this a joke? I don't see it being any less prevalent than at any time in the past. There are plenty of trustworthy sites and plenty of people know about them. It's all over Reddit for anybody who's interested and it doesn't take a rocket scientist. It's easier now than it's ever been before.

You mean the best mobile phone OS that we ever had? Unfortunately disastrously managed and then squandered, but still.

Also, Vista was a mess, but it was ambitious and it laid the foundation for 7 and it was only around for a few years before being replaced. Unlike 10, where Nadella has doubled down on the worst choices and even worse ones were made going into 11 (HOW THE FUCK DO YOU SET DEFAULT APPLICATIONS NOW, THIS IS FUCKING NONSENSE).

Ballmer's tenure started with XP and eventually gave us Windows 7. Nadella gave us 10 and 11. Though 10 was largely developed under Ballmer before its initial launch, it's been under Nadella's stewardship ever since. I'll take Ballmer, thanks.

In which region? It's basically irrelevant outside the US.

So because there was a revolution in Ukraine because the then president refused to do the people's will in regards to the EU, Russia is justified in invading a sovereign nation, Ukraine, taking its territory, kidnapping its children and raping, torturing and killing its citizens.

Russia has no right whatsoever to invade Ukraine. It doesn't matter that there was a "coup" in Ukraine.

If there's a coup in Mexico, the US isn't justified in annexing Mexico. That's just absurd.

Please, leave this place and never come back. You don't belong in civilized society.

I know a lot of the words here, but most of it sounds like gibberish. I wish I had the expertise and domain knowledge to be able to do something like this. It was a fantastic read and I'm awed by the author's dedication and level of knowledge.

Unfortunately, as an enterprise software developer, my hardware proficiency stops at being able to assemble PCs and diagnose simple hardware issues (is this power supply broken?) at a very abstract level. I've encountered issues like this before and lacked the expertise to properly diagnose it on a low enough level, which can be frustrating.

It's also coarse and rough.

I generally wasn't consciously aware that it even was an acronym. For me adb was just a command like cat. I don't randomly ask myself what cat stands for, or all the other obtuse commands I use on the command line. Life is too short.

Now we get Microsoft delivered bloat and unwanted, pre-installed software. They'll even automatically install all the OEM junk when updating a fresh W10/11 install with a clean USB stick made from the MS iso. That didn't happen with a fresh XP install with a non-OEM disc.

I've had the same issue with Linux. It's far from immune. I've also generally found it easier to recover a borked Windows install than a Linux one.

One of the reasons why I'm glad Stadia died. That's a future I didn't want to see realized.

Unfortunately, businesses actually think this way. See any number of lawsuits based on this kind of thinking.

When the people who sell it to us are free to revoke access at any time, then there's no walking back being done by us. We're just recognizing that the accepted state of things was reneged on by one party and they can't insist on being in the right when we decide we're not obligated to follow their arbitrary rules anymore.

This is why I can never accept the idea that we're just buying a license. Laws need to be made that ensure once you buy the rights to access a piece of content, that you keep that right regardless of who the current owner is or if the distribution method changes. If I buy a book, I never have to worry about it being taken away or what happens if somebody else gains ownership of a property.

Was that a performance limitation or a conscious design choice because of their "cloud" feature?

I don't understand how Unity burns through up to a billion in revenue every single year, yet their engine still feels so half-baked and unpolished. Where's all that money going?

> some authors will be thinking about not losing rights to their original characters, music, story, etc.

But this didn't used to be an issue. It was accepted that things would fall into the public domain and you couldn't benefit from something for eternity. It's unacceptable that we've finally reached a point where only the creator or owner can ever do something with a creation, regardless of how long ago it was created. Just because you created a thing doesn't give you an inalienable right to own it forever. We're just making it so because "commercial value" and other bullshit.

Copyright was never meant to give perpetual rights, which is what your scheme would do (as it does now). So might as well not change the current system, because the conclusion is the same.

The final arbiter was never "does it have commercial value still?" until today. That's a purely modern perspective pushed by companies like Disney, because of course it is. That's all they care about. We don't have to care about that. In fact, I'd suggest it's completely immoral to accept that framing when we look at how important public domain has historically been to our culture.
