I've recommended teams that have been accepted, and recommended teams that have been rejected. It's really just another data point to consider, not a golden ticket.
And it certainly can't hurt to network with YC alumni, for reasons beyond just getting a rec.
Ultimately what you want to do is de-risk the potential investment by showing that you have significant traction, and having actual paying customers is a great way to do that.
Yes and no. In my situation (OP), I had about a month to find a place for my wife to live in NYC (until I got there after YC), find a place for our team to live in SF, and find someone to rent the place we owned in the DC area. And it all worked out. Sometimes the time constraints can be a good thing.
Reminds me of Dharmesh Shah's talk at SXSW where he shared the-one-metric-to-rule-them-all that they developed at HubSpot to measure success for everyone on the team (from sales people to developers): CHI (Customer Happiness Index).
The concept is that everything the business does should be focused around the goal of increasing customer happiness, and this single metric aligns everyone's motives around the goal.
Nope, you're not missing anything. Startup teams are so small that everyone on the team has to be able to add value by creating something tangible. There's no room for middle-management.
We've been using Mailgun for the last couple months at COLOURlovers to manage and analyze our weekly newsletter campaigns (400k+/week) and handle our transactional email. Easily worth every penny, and the support from Taylor and Ev has been fantastic.
"DidThis makes it easy to spread micro-actions that are fun or useful to as many people as possible around the world."
I think that messaging does you a disservice. How many people are going to hit your site and say "Finally! An easy way to spread micro-actions!" (what are micro-actions anyway?)
How about appealing to ego: "Use DidThis to tell the world what you've done and encourage others to join you."
As his co-founder, I can assure you he doesn't push his "policy" on anyone else. Far from it. It's more a philosophy of being present for every moment, and living life to the fullest.
And pretty sure he was the one that bought a bottle of champagne for our team to celebrate the end of our adventure through YC...just he didn't drink any.
Yup, it's still our legal parent company name, but we found that when we told people we were CHROMAom they said "huh?", and when we said we were COLOURlovers they said "I know COLOURlovers!"
