You might be surprised at how many machines work that way, though.

There's the classic aphorism about tools like lathes: "This machine has no brain, please use your own." But that's usually in an industrial setting with OSHA, mandated safety trainings, inspections, a culture of reporting unsafe practices without judgement, etc.

As CNC machines get cheaper and smaller, we are starting to see things like laser cutters sold to consumers with a pair of glasses and a manual rather than an enclosure. Hope you remember to lock the door if you have kids or pets...

It is a worrying trend which seems to be accelerating in the US due to crumbling and senescent regulatory institutions.

I once had the opportunity to talk with some apple growers in Washington (state).

They said that they regularly sprayed their trees with a mix of water and soft detergent early in the season, to prevent parasites and larvae from taking hold. As I understood it, they viewed soap as a simple solution. It was not completely organic and natural, but it helped to keep pests away and it did not seem to cause undue harm to the orchards or the apples.

Could you expand more on the "mobile land rigs"?

I've always wondered if any organizations have tried to make something like a Sandcrawler.

Yes, of course.

A nice TV is a sizeable appliance that should live for 10-20 years. If I couldn't buy a fridge or microwave that didn't show ads on its smart display, I'd also be happy to pay a big premium for a commercial model.

I probably shouldn't give appliance companies ideas, but I'd give even odds that we'll be having that conversation within 10 years anyways.

That could make a great comedy sketch.

A posh-speaking student on walkabout takes a temp job explaining public toilets to urban Australian pedestrians.

A few iterations later, and I still find myself trying to think of ways to make the premise less offensive...live comedy must be ridiculously difficult these days.
