The sun is a physical body, so a physical explanation makes sense. The problem is, our subjective experience isn't actually physical. It has no mass, no shape, no size. It may correspond to movements in the brain, but the experience itself is not material. For all we know we could be in the matrix, and our subjective experpence could be just as real. In fact Elon musk thinks it's a very high probability that we are in the matrix. Since our experience of the world is not material it doesn't seem to follow that there must be a material explanation for it.
I would say that the title "it's slow" is ridiculous because 1/30th of the fastest possible speed in the universe is insanely fast. Better to say "it's fast, but I think we can make it 3 times faster".
I think the biggest reason is that the USA is a melting pot from people all over the world. The culture clashes in this country are way bigger than you would see in such a small homogenous country as Denmark, or even Israel (which has socialized healthcare). When there is a uniform culture, it makes it much easier for people to cooperate. However when there are many different cultures, people naturally gravitate to what is familiar to them. That makes cooperation much harder.
I'm not sure that anyone can, but just that certain large entities can, and it is apparently profitable for them to do so, so they have incentive to keep it in line. If it's selling for less than it's worth, they will "cash out" at the end of the day and pick up the underlying shares at a discount. If it's selling for more than it's worth, they will buy more underlying securities and create new shares that sell for more than they are worth. I'm no expert though so it would be good to look into it more.
Not really the ETFs are generally backed by the actual securities they represent. They may deviate from market value a bit intraday, but those deviations are picked up by special arbitrageurs and quickly eliminated.
Vultr is at $2.50 a month for 512mb ram which is plenty for a side project. As for your tech stack you'd use Linux of course but as for programming language it's your preference.
I think my current favorite stack would be node + mongo + vue for a side project. Sure people hate mongo for big projects, but it's just so stinking convenient.
The prison system isn't the only thing at fault though. The courts are horribly rigged as well and it looks like that was why this man spent so much time behind bars. It's a terrible thing that we have prosecutors who further their career by getting more in jail, no matter whether they are guilty or innocent.
This guy is crazy. Maybe a ubi is good for some time to help people get on their feet but a lifetime entitlement to huge amounts of other people's money is beyond belief. The taxes he proposed are insane!
I think universal healthcare should be on people's mind way before ubi. Even bill gates says we just aren't rich enough for ubi yet
I agree 100%. Google has done so much good for the world by creating not only the best search engine, but also the best browser, the best maps, the best free email, an amazing mobile operating system, and all of it for free. Sure they sell ads and that annoys people, but for a free product, how can you complain?
These big guys do amazing things. Yes with an organization that size, there is going to be some problems at some point, but without a doubt, we are much better off for what the guys at google have done.
Unfortunately on HN, people can become so cynical. Any time somebody succeeds, it seems like there are a chorus of people writing off the success as bad in some way or inauthentic. It's almost like people are jealous.
Instead of trying to tear down those who succeed, and who are giving back (like google to the open source world), let's be grateful for the insane amount of good they have done.
When social security started, they promised it would never take up more than 3% income tax. Today it is 15%. That is a 500% increase in taxes to support it, and it's only getting worse as lifespans increase and fertility rates decrease.
Bill Gates said that someday people will not have to work because of machines, but today we are just not yet at that level. Every able-bodied person should work if they need money. It's just not right for me to struggle paying my bills and 25% of my income to taxes so some other able bodied person can sit around doing nothing.
Hopefully this is the start of artificial, government imposed barriers being torn down. Hopefully someday anybody will be able to be a lawyer or plumber, or anything else they want without government requiring a competition and innovation killing license. Thanks Uber!
Hi Orange County. Life after death is very real. People try to explain away our consciousness, how it "arises" mystically out of our brains. However, the reality is our souls are immaterial. They have no space, no weight or mass. They are spiritual, and will live on after we die.
Jesus explained what the current world is like - people walking around in darkness, because nobody really understands the way. God sent Jesus to be the "light of the world" so that life makes sense. He also came to teach us how to get to heaven.
Modern man claims that there is no such thing as absolute good or evil. But if thats true, it means that there is no real good or evil, which is absurd. There is good and evil, and we will all face the judgement one day.
Nobody is good enough to stand before the Almighty God on that day and win. People lie steal, watch porn, all kinds of things God hates. Just like a judge will throw people in jail for 1 crime despite a lifetime of good, so God will throw people in hell for one sin.
Of course God loves us and desires a way out. So he sent his son Jesus to the world to bear the punishment for our sin by being crucified. I don't totally understand how it works, but God accepts his sacrifice in our place if we will simply accept it ourselves by believing in his work. Jesus explained it like this "God loved the world so much that he sent his only begotten son so that whoever believes in him would not perish but have everlasting life. God did not send his son into the world to condem the world, but so that the world might be saved through him."
God loves you and he made a way for you to live an eternity in paradise. The way there is so simple, all you have to do is believe in him.
Jesus said "ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened". If you would like to know about God, you need to ask God to show himself to you and to seek out the truth, whether Jesus is who he said he is. Reading the gospel of John is a good place to start. For more evidence, William Laine Craig has some good stuff about it. there is nothing more important in life than knowing God. You can't learn to code if you don't spend time coding. Similarly you won't get to know God if you never look for him.
People shouldn't use hackintoshes. In addition to being buggy and illegal, it's also disrespectful. They put a ton of work into their os and their right to sell it how they please should be respected. If you don't want to pay, then don't use it.
For everybody who seems baffled by this decision, it's about finances. He believes a private organization, which doesn't have the infinite pockets of the government is a better way to reign in cost.
Interestingly he's having the private organization take out loans for upgrades, instead of the government. That is a win for taxpayers if you ask me.
