Programming is in tension between the Light Side and the Dark Side.

The Light Side believes in giving people freedom and power to achieve freedom, to allow themselves to express themselves better through programming, to become better programmers through the tools the light side provides; in the Light Side believes in programming as a way of thinking.

The Dark Side believes that people are incapable of handling freedom and must be restricted and controlled under the service of various organizations - generally companies. The companies will control access to programming and control the programmers via this access. The dark side does not believe in making programmers better programmers, it believes in managing programmers. The dark side does not believe in helping programmers to think, it believes in thinking for them.

sure, but people shouldn't lie about what the current consequence of things are either. I'm pretty sure I'm closer to death and homelessness than Xavier Moreau is.

on edit: also I think the whole death and homelessness worry expressed seems sort of weird, because I think the normal order would be homelessness and death. I may die soon, but in that context I will not actually be worrying about homelessness. Maybe that's just me though.

>virtually a slow and painful sentence to homelessness and death

OK, do you have information as to how close to homelessness and death these two are? Based on my reading I'm unsure regarding Baud, but my impression is Moreau is probably not significantly affected.

in most other countries renowned for being efficient it would not be considered efficient to answer in a language the questioner evidently does not speak.

>everyone under the age of 50 speaks good English and switched to that as soon as my first badly-conjugated sentence left my mouth.

OK maybe things have changed in recent years. I was always annoyed when coming to visit family living in Berlin for a couple days or driving in to a conference, and inevitably there would come a time when I would have to ask someone for help and I would have to ask in English because I do not speak German (although due to youthful immersion I start to remember it again after a couple of weeks) and they would inevitably answer in German.

I could somewhat understand when we stopped in a park asking where the convention center was of just a couple people by the side of the road, but asking a ticket agent at a train station what route I should take to get to a particular station and getting replies in German seemed especially rude.

At any rate despite some good experiences with Germans regarding helpfulness I have had a few too many negative experiences.

Obviously I don't mind anyone proving me wrong by going and doing the actual statistics work that I can't be bothered to do. I just have suppositions that I have not bothered to confirm as they do not significantly impact my life whether correct or incorrect.

I certainly don't want him sent somewhere violent, but the life in prison for financial crimes is generally less harsh, when comparing experiences not reasons for imposition, than life in prison for other things.

Also, just off the top of my head I would expect many people getting life in prison for other things are younger than people getting life in prison for financial crimes, since financial crime tends to happen between mid 30s to mid 40s and violent crime tends to happen in teens and twenties. Assuming that the reason for skewing financial crime higher, because needing business connections and experience to pull off, holds with the size of crime without an stats to back me up I will say my naive expectation is the financial crimes that earn you life in prison would tend to be in the 50s, while the violent crimes mainly remain teens and twenties.

It seems it may also be used for really embarrassing things that will make powerful people mad if you just state them outright so it is necessary to state it as a question when you know the answer is yes.

Of course any yes or no question can be answered "no" but Betteridge, as we know, means a factually correct answer, and so there are these edge cases where the question mark is used for slightly different reasons than the law assumes and can be answered "yes".

Generally in a federal prison for non-violent offenders.

on edit: In the U.S obviously, in Western European nations I would assume better conditions than that even.

>I don't think any of those terms are much better than acronyms

The Social Contract is so much better, it is pithy and you can even sort of guess your way to what it means, it has resisted change over centuries, it far out performs an acronym.

The Categorical Imperative is abstract, badly descriptive and overly intellectual, much like most of Kant. The Categorical Imperative instead of something like Essential Moral Principle or anything that sort of pointed at what was meant is really a sort of acronym in words, you need to be an expert to know what it means.

This is why the Social Contract is a phrase used by common people in many languages, and the Categorical Imperative is used by Philosophers - generally only when discussing Kant specifically.

https://medium.com/luminasticity/on-premature-optimization-i...

wanders a bit around the premature optimization history, but later has

>Nowadays almost all development is for things that are not necessary. Pretty much all modern development is for things that are entertainment....The difference between things that are necessary and entertainment is that you will wait however long it takes to do the necessary thing

in the reductive view of the article everything that is not necessary is termed entertainment.

But I have noticed this. I often drop useful things because it just isn't worth it to wait. So the argument really is, in today's world, speed is almost always the most important factor anything accessed through the computer can have.

I don't know if I would say he was brilliant, that seems a bit of an overshoot, but I will say the following on his behalf in order to not suggest he is just a lucky idiot.

Lots of people were in that space trying to guess what was going to be the way to go, he did, that can of course be that he guessed with luck. But if someone guesses big with luck maybe it is just as reasonable to say that they had at least some clever insights.

He has multiple times bought his way out of the things that would threaten him. That is of course the game, it doesn't make him brilliant but it does make him reasonably competent at that part of his business.

There are lots of people that are described as neurodivergent who do not understand social interaction, or are very bad at it, let us, for the sake of argument, say that Zuckerberg is one of these (it is possible that my face looks like I am sucking on a lemon as I type this), but most of these people do not bother to try to model various ways that the people do socially interact do it, and build successful businesses on top of a model that may perhaps be flawed but does have some predictive/manipulative power.

I'm just wondering - what is the benefit of a karma-farming bot? I mean I get the benefits of bots on bluesky and twitter and Instagram etc. because you can turn high engagement into money!!

I figured bots here were because people maybe were trying out AI tools, scripts, or because keeping their business visible to people who might be interested.

But what benefit can you derive from the Karma.I have pretty good Karma and it hasn't done anything for me that I'm aware of?
