> Got rejected for not 'technically competent' despite polished complex app on both the App Store and on Github. It's insulting to the point I want to start cancelling processes with all Unicorns...
Because "how do we know you didn't copy paste it from a tutorial and claim it as yours?"
It is insulting, and frankly discouraging. As if the only one true way to tell whether you know your stuff or not is to check if you can solve some silly riddle/puzzle under the gun.
One solution is to only apply to companies without a broken hiring process, but sadly they're very rare.
Same here, have tried QC25s and didn't keep them because it made me feel like I had a cold, gave me headaches, and felt like my ears were not equalized pressure wise.
I use concert earplugs now, they are invisible unless someone really looks in my ears, and they attenuate all frequencies equally. This way I can also use them at concerts and they won't ruin the music, just make it much quieter across every frequency.
The open office can't die soon enough, what an absurd fad this is.
It reminds me of Genoa on newsroom. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen the show, and highly recommend watching it if you haven't. You don't even have to be into the news or politics, I haven't watched the news or read a newspaper in over 5 years and I very much enjoyed the show.
I very occasionally still Hy things from Amazon when I have absolutely no other chance. But I do everything I can to find the time locally and buy it instore or from another more reputable online retailer than amazon (which is pretty much anyone except ebay and aliexpress)
When I want commodity items that don't have a specific manufacturer (HDD enclosures, small tools, etc), I'll go to aliexpress because it's exactly the same things as sold on amazon but for a quarter of the price. I just have to wait 3 weeks longer than on amazon.
I don't even get books from Amazon anymore, because there are pirate prints of books.
It's all fun and games when it's just about having the item break after a couple of weeks because it was a low quality copy, but amazon also sells more dangerous things like Christmas lights with fake CE and UL markings or PPE that aren't sturdy enough to meet the norms they supposedly adhere to.
Not even mentioning the returned and used items sold as new for the full price, or the appalling way in which Amazon treats its workers.
It doesn't even make life that much more complicated, and thinking whether I want something so much as to go to the store or wait a month to get it from China is an excellent filter to block impulse purchases.
I used to wonder too why would anyone answer yes if that was really their intent.
I was told that this was a technicality: you plan on assassinating the president (or whatever the form asks these days) but you answered no. Now you can be charged for lying on your immigration document which gives the government a lot more leverage and opens more avenues to convict you (because lying is bad mmmkay). I don't know how much truth there is to it but it makes more sense than having the question hoping someone with bad intentions will have a lapse of judgement and decide to be truthful on the form.
The people I know who have the approach you have now seem to have a harder time finding a job, because every employer expects their engineers to be passionate about whatever it is they're disrupting which signals that they'll work without counting their hours. What is your secret?
In my experience, bonuses are also very discretionary and completely opaque. I've seen countless offers touting a sizeable bonus at the entire discretion of the company with no way to know what are the criteria for award. And what do you know, nobody ever got these phantom bonuses because reasons. But it was included in offer letters and used to lower the negotiated salary as of it was a sure thing, and not everyone was savvy enough to push back.
I suspect that being a trust fund kid ruins it for you anyway. If you were born that way you'll have a harder time enjoying it because this has always been your baseline and you don't really know what life without is like. Now if you started out normal but became trust fund level rich, then I reckon there is a higher chance you'll actually appreciate it. So, don't feel bad, things feel more rewarding when you've earned them but not as much when they were given to you without effort on your part.
Yes, the delay is random. According to the manual, this was validated with experts Rabbis and is congruent with the way things should be done on Sabbath.
My oven has a Shabbat mode: when you activate this mode, touching the controls doesn't make any sound anymore, opening the oven door doesn't trigger the light, and when touching a button the effect is delayed by a few seconds so you're not technically getting any result from touching the button while still getting the effect from touching the button.
Apple's business model heavily relies on planned obsolescence to bully you into throwing away YOUR working iPhone when they've decided its time for you to drop another 700-1000$ by making their latest OS so slow that your phone is essentially unusable. Of course you'll also have to throw away all the expensive accessories you might own because the connection port has changed format too, yet again.
At least on Android I can install a custom ROM, root it, and install a system wide adblocker like adaway. Oh and also my phones cost under 300$ and I can keep them working until I decide it's time to replace it.
Because android works better for me doesn't mean it has to be the same for everyone, but in any case Apple is out to milk money out of you and not to save you from google. Neither companies have your best interest in mind, you're just there to make them money.
