"we have one of the (relatively) few successful businesses that we get to read about in depth: (i.e., actually making money)" How can you argue this? $50K over 3 years is 60% of the median income for Detroit residents. So if doing 60% as well as Detroit defines success, everyone deserves a gold star.

It's hard to engage you on the bank comment b/c you and I must have very different definitions of what level of revenues constitutes a successful business and laughter-driven transport to the bank. The best I can tell is he's sold $50,000 of bingo cards over three years. How is that success? $50k/3 is pretty close to living at, or below, the poverty level. Sounds more like crying to the bank. One of the major factors that drives folks to entrepreneurship is the possibility of making millions, or more. Not thousands. But if you want to to aim low, and applaud others who do so as well, I won't stop you. Just stop voting up their posts.

cutting edge tech stuff: I sort of misspoke there and I meant a combination of cutting edge entrepreneurship/web aps, so that should cover a fair portion of low page number posts on HN.

12 Year old with a computer: Seriously you must be kidding. I think the revenue numbers alone bear out why one would not want to start/attempt a business that produces a product that can be done with Print Shop.

In summation, my critique probably has more to do with the HN community who votes up time wasting posts, and less to do with what patio11 chooses to do with his talents. He and the HN community should not boast, or vote up such stories of middling success, or failure, I'd say.

printing bingo cards is a business any 12 year old with a computer could set up. Couldn't you do this on Print Shop and an Apple IIe? Most tech stuff posted on HN is the cutting edge of web apps. And if it wasn't, I wouldn't read this site multiple times per day. Sure, his writing skills and analysis are decent/good, but the content he writes about is laughable. He should spend some of his blogging energy on developing a more interesting topic/business to blog about.

I'm not sure it's a good strategy for Zynga to make enemies of Facebook--for a number of reasons. The one that comes to my mind is Facebook must have tons of data on Zynga's deceptive trade practices. If this info gets out, and it's as bad as the conspiracy theorists suspect, it could shut Zyna down.
