I feel like the way Asha talks about Xbox owning game studios could also be applied to Microsoft Xbox. Pc gaming and console gaming has never been closer. Is it advantageous to own two essentially competing platforms?
Is console gaming really a core pillar for Microsoft? Should they kill Xbox, fall back to the (I imagine) hyper profitable platforms of Mojang and King, and focus on making windows gaming as good as it can be, which I think would tie in with the overall improving windows strategy.
They aren’t Sony, they aren’t Nintendo, they aren’t Steam, and I feel like the only unique thing they have is the Windows + PC gaming (that Valve are working hard to erode). If they have any chance of making a viable platform, for me, it needs to be in this space.
No one needs Meta AI. They have missed the boat with chatbots / agents / harnesses like Claude Code.
Can you picture anyone you know stopping using the AI services they currently use for an AI service provided by Meta?
They have such huge opportunities in selling access to their data centres to Anthropic etc, and improving their own ad models for better targeted adds (using their proprietary data and their own infra!), it is maddening to watch them try to make SOTA LLM models and harnesses no one will ever use.
Ah man I remember playing Red Alert against my friends online where you had to put the other persons phone number in and (I guess??) you made some kind of direct network connection. No idea if it was billed as internet or what!
I think the issue matters (not us vs china) due to the investment and exposure normal people have to the valuations of the AI companies. It feels like the US govt could make this the pin that pops the bubble. If these companies loose their lead their value drops and the stock market tanks.
Interesting to consider this inline with recent us export bans, could the US be squandering its lead by giving the open source, largely Chinese labs catch up (in terms of model quality available to masses), will US labs be able to maintain the lead without users being able to use their latest models?
The country is a complete mess - cost of living has gone up massively, wages have gone up significantly slower, no increase in income tax bands mean any increase in wages are eaten by taxes, soon to be 7 prime ministers in 10yrs. Opportunities squandered in energy policy. Right wing rising, with reform no doubt winning the next election. I despair at my kids future - I’m not sure what there is to be optimistic about.
To get into Astrophotographg you probably need to spend £2-3k for some equipment, if you are based somewhere like the north of England this translates to a handful of clear nights per year. Sending your equipment here gives you an order of magnitude more clear nights.
I wouldn’t do this as I like the fact my photos are taken in my back yard but each to their own
Maybe they could just like look at photos someone else has taken? If you are using someone else’s equipment, at a location you’ve never been too, it feels like you may as well just look at bubbles images of things.
Curser is the only possible play to make Grok AI some how useful to enterprise, where the vast majority of spend is / will be? Feels like it could only possibly worth this much to Musk. For me Anthropic are too far ahead - this will likely all be for zero shareholder value when Anthropic continues to pull ahead. Will be interesting to see if Musk switches off Collosus to impede Anthropic at some point.
I feel like you are missing the difference between cash out the door and the market cap value of a business. One is a real tangible thing, the other is a function of the stock market.
I don’t think google would spend this money if they did not need this compute, and who know what will happen with SpaceX valuation over the course of a few yrs.
Most things like this are more straightforward than we want them to be - this feels like google paying market value for compute?
Where does it end, I don’t see people using AI less as time moves on.
I’ve not seen a cohesive statement on what the world looks like when LLMs can do work perfectly (which on a long enough timeline is coming).
Do Google/ Anthropic / OpenAI capture all value, do clients still want consultancies, if the client wants something that a human would use to do something does that project hold any value in an LLM dominant world, why even bother.
I don’t know what you are saying here? That a program running on a GPU in a data center is alive because it can predict what words to say next?
I find it strange that people are quite often unwilling to see animals as conscious yet here we are discussing if an empheral computer programme is. Have a think on why we don’t eat people but eat chickens - chickens are clearly more conscious than any AI, yet still not enough to stop them being considered food.
