Astronomers are going to hate this even more than they already do!

This. I don't particularly like the LLM writing style, but we've read a ton of very poorly written texts over the year with no complaints. LLMs are average writers with an annoying style, but not bad writers. If the content is good, I don't care if a LLM wrote it.

I was surprised to come back to my XBOX account after 10 years in the US and see that very old digital purchases from previous console generations were not only still available, but actually playable on the latest console through transparent emulation! They did a pretty good job with that.

Sure. The place for these adults to get books is the county/city library and not the school library. As I said, there's a certain common denominator that we need to respect when talking about public schools.

I've banned a number of books from my household as I don't want my child exposed to them. And I support banning them from the school. Children aren't adults. It's reasonable to expect that education caters to a common denominator within society. I would only have a problem if adults couldn't acquire these books.

"There is no doubt that using Z.ai's official API and subscription is almost certainly a non-starter, with their terms being at best weak and the deep connection to Mainland China."

This is the key statement in the article. I think people don't realize that these "open" weight models exist because giving away your product at a loss is a time honored marketing strategy. There's nothing guaranteeing that the next iterations will be open (remember "Open"AI?).

The Chinese labs are profit seeking companies. If they can't recoup their investment through API use, they won't be able to train more models. But if the argument is 'who cares, training models will be so cheap anyone will be able to do it ',then check the comment elsewhere on this comment section about free alternatives for consumer and enterprise software.

Oh... And the variation 'what we have today is already good enough for everyone' argument is just another incarnation of '640Kb should be enough for everyone'.

I used AI to forecast that AI forecasters won't beat the market. We can move on now.

You got it (I was going to say "nailed it" but that's becoming an LLM marker).

This is exactly what I feel about a lot of the paid investment advice out there. Compounding can make any decent alpha worth a ton, to the point that these people would be investment bankers and not advisors if they knew what they were talking about.

It's not about being important, simply fair.

I'm also not saying he makes no difference. I'm just saying he's not good enough to deserve some complex plan from Belgium. A small tweak on their plan and they will be good to go. He's a good player but no superstar.

Gee, we're not talking about Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo here... What kind of super secret, complex scheme was Belgium creating for Balogun?

How much are we going to pay for "AI kits" once the DRAM shortage is over? Will we be able to run a local model equivalent to the current AI frontier in sub $1000 hardware, even if dedicated, in 5 years?

So what? It has now been used twice. I challenge anyone who's a soccer fan to look at the play that led to the red card and say "Yeah, that deserved a red card" with a straight face.

The outcome was fair. That was a scandalous red card and a rule that exists to be sparingly used in situations like that was triggered. Hopefully it will keep being sparingly used but they should not hesitate to overturn unjust punishments that are clearly against the spirit of soccer.

Why are people so upset about it? Is Belgium afraid to face the full US squad? If Belgium wins, which is the most likely result, nobody will be able to say "the US could have won if it wasn't for that red card!"

There is a rule to reverse the call on the books. Article 27 allows FIFA to replace the suspension for a probationary period. Of course the online mob didn't bother checking that.

AI can do a surprisingly good job at philosophy. I think that the "knowledge join" LLMs are so good at helps the of philosophical works.

That said, the post is pretty boring.

I don't disagree with you, but it's important to pay attention to where the money is. Cheap non frontier models is something that Anthropic and open AI could do too, but who's willing to pay a premium for using them? It will be like competing to sell rice, lots of demand at Rock bottom margins.

Note to everybody: this is a very exotic position and the vast majority of people I've met during career would strongly disagree with that. I don't have a Master or PhD, but my Bachelor degree was absolutely worth my time and was essential to enable me to have a successful career where I earned millions and retired early.

I think the policy makes sense, but I don't like the evolution of a false dichotomy in the conversations about AI.

I'm a professional developer like many here. Based on my career achievements, I believe I'm at least decent at that. I completely understand the revolt against vibe coded solutions because I've seen many questionable things coming from AI. But the people who copy and paste things straight out of the LLM are simply poor developers, the same ones who would blindly copy and paste snippets out of Stack Overflow into commercial systems.

I think partnering with AI makes me a much better and more productive developer. I'm completely dispassionate about the thing.I use it because it saves me time. The majority of the code is still mine but the focused AI contributions under my supervision are better than anything I could have come up on my own in the same period of time.

In other words, the false dichotomy is 100% AI vs 0% AI. I understand Godot because if they don't discourage AI, they know they will be in practice inviting 100% AI. This said, given how good Godot developers are, I know that many if not most of them know that AI can be extremely useful if applied properly.

Markets are competitive if and only if P === NP!

Now seriously, I wonder if AI collusion/use in investments would add to the market inefficiency and create opportunities for observing investors.

Came here to say this. I have no idea what these products are supposed to be. Very much "Windows Github Copilot Home", "Github Enterprise Office 365", "Docs Gemini Assist One", "Windows Copilot Pro Educational"

This is another piece of evidence against the "Zuckerberg Exceptionalism" theory. I've argued before that he is neither a great leader nor a particularly intelligent person outside some alleged Math talent. He was, at best, a competent entrepreneur and very hard worker who was in the right place at the right time.

Meta's strategy is the kind of thing many/most people here could have come up with:

* "We have lots of users, let's show them more ads"

* "They are doing AI, let's do AI".

* "I've watched Ready Player One, let's build VR".

Duh.
