It’s not a given they were doing something related that could go on a resume. Could have been time off for parenting, caring for an ill family member, unable to legally work (for example living abroad for a partner’s education or work assignment), personal health problem/treatment, etc.

For the community: What are some ways to support a person getting back into the field and avoiding discrimination against time out of work?

This is where "real life" is helpful. Ask other people who use these things which one they like. People at the dog park, salespeople at well-curated pet stores for the dog scissors and other people who like hot sauce or gourmet cooking stores for the same. Coworkers, friends of friends, etc. If you don't interact with others for whatever reason, look on large retailer sites for reviews - and read the bad ones. Sometimes a common problem with the product will be commented on a few times. Well known/established brands can be a guide (vs no name garbage from amazon/china).

Search engines are pretty useless these days - any answer I'm looking for regarding anything is not found and instead I get AI/bot pulling non-answers/keyword driven paragraphs into a click seeking website.

At some point what could have been a great tool was taken over by capitalism and adtech. It's a shame.

I don’t have a google/gmail account (never have, to my recollection), and this pop up is on nearly every page I visit. I can’t get rid of it because I don’t have an account to change the settings on. It’s made me despise google more than I previously did, which I didn’t think was possible.

Thank you DDG for recognizing this infuriating issue. I don’t care if the search results are suboptimal. I love you anyway.

You refer to your transaction as private and yet you use Venmo… I don’t think “private” means what you think it means.

So it seems like there’s nothing I can do about this and have to live the rest of my internet life with this pop up everywhere I look.

Thanks, Google, for making the internet a worse place for me.

Thank you for the tip. I don't understand what etc/host file is or how to add. I'm not tech oriented. Please clarify, I'm willing to try anything at this point.

I don't think I can get Ublock Origin for my version of Safari (running a 2015 laptop and it stopped being able to update about 1-2 years ago). Edit: looks like they don't make UBO for Safari?

So is this my internet life now? If I have to close this popup on pretty much every site I visit I'm definitely going to pull a Ron Swanson throwing the computer in the dumpster scene.

Safari

I miss Firefox and prefer it. Something happened to it one day and now I'm unable to use/reinstall Firefox on my computer (see comment history. Could use help with that too...)

I live in an older apartment building so it's not an option for me unless I want to plan my life around finding places to charge the EV.

I can move to a "luxury" apt with EV charging, but I'm not keen on moving and paying 50% more rent just for this reason.

Tried a few times to buy a house but laughably outbid by double income/tech (Bay Area).

So I continue to drive my invincible 1999 Chevy that gets 30 mpg.

I suspect many apartment dwellers like me would love to buy an EV if we could charge it where it's parked, or were able to buy a house despite our sub-500k/yr compensation so we could install a charger.

It's not very practical nor is it inexpensive for most people to move all of their belongings into an apartment and storage unit, then move it out into a new home.

Same situation. Got them from the Levi’s store. In my mind Amazon=counterfeits/stolen

I’d only order very specific things from Amazon and as a result haven’t actually ordered in a couple years.

I'm a highly paid professional non-tech worker in the bay area so there are some key differences between us.

1) I live in an apartment without electric charging. I've been financially and otherwise ready and willing to buy an electric car (Chevy Bolt in Oasis Blue) for a few years, but haven't been able to buy a house due to being outbid multiple times (mostly by tech workers) and essentially giving up. No RSUs = no house/luxury condo = no practical way to charge the car.

2) I go into work every day, to one of two sites, and one is about 15 miles of freeway driving. So between that and personal use, I'm spending $60 on gas about every 1.5 weeks. Used to be around 40.

3) As a tech worker, you presumably work from home and have more company-paid benefits than most other working professionals. Dry cleaning and health insurance has gone up for me.

4) Do you buy groceries and cook your meals? There has been about a 15-20% increase in my grocery expenses, even the stats say it's <10%.

5) It also sounds like you don't have children and their related expenses (childcare, school supplies, extracurriculars). These have significantly increased.

If the only raised prices you can think of are coffee shops and restaurants and you characterize the increase as "very slight", yes I would say you are in a bubble. Nothing wrong with that; just recognize that most people live a very different lifestyle than you.

Are you talking about real cereal like bulk oatmeal, bulk cream of wheat, etc? Or boxed branded cereal? The latter is going to be a terrible value like any processed food, and is always going to be subjected to shrinkflation. Worse because they know families with children buy it mindlessly or because their kids demand it.

I miss firefox. I had it working great and one day it just stopped connecting to websites. Not sure if it was associated with an update or what. Tried resets/restarts, tried to delete it completely and reinstall and nothing worked and I couldn't even reinstall it. I've been on safari ever since and pretty sad about it. The new feature seems super nice tho.
