Honestly not surprised about this. I'm a long time reader, short time commentator.
HN is a left liberal leaning website. They believe in a borderless world, where all countries should take regugees and have their native society be diluted. Too big to fail government and regulation, except when they can come in and disrupt something. It's ok for them and their investors to reap the rewards where the little guy suffers losing his job.
Sure the little guy can retrain in STEM, doesn't matter if he racks up masses of debt and takes 10+ years. Oh, he can't do that, well there's always basic income.
I expect to be downvoted here, but lets just say. If you are against everything I said. You'd fit well here. Nevermind that America just voted and said a big NO to NY and CA.
Oh and consider this account abandoned. Looks like I've been warned by dang with my last post. Which was sarcasm. But because I attacked his beloved Hillary Cliton, Nancy Pelosi, Jill Stein.
Seriously CA cannot go bankrupt fast enough! A pox on your house.
But, for a brand new greenfield application. Why would someone choose PHP for their backend, when Golang is available?
I was at a developer meeting with a company who were reviewing what to use for a client project. The developers are from PHP/jQuery shop, however they felt it necessary to be with the times so to speak, for the future to get other projects. They opted for Vuejs and Golang with server side processing.
Apparently the client has some server side operations which are particular heavy and mentioned that php/python/ruby are just too slow with their own internal testing.
> I miss the inquiring, helpful Net of increasing yore. Enough other people do, too, that I haven't given up hope it may find a home somewhere.
Not sure how old you are, but I used to use 300 baud modems. I was pre-internet. I remember then 1997 on irc, then when the masses really woke up to the Internet around 1999-2001.
Anyway, people around that time really had hope for the internet.
Nowadays, well millennials just don't seem to have the same feeling. I figure they are in their bubbles happy to have whatever sandbox they are in keep the status quo and everything else, as long as their wants and needs are met, doesn't matter.
Give it a generation or two and we'll be just like Wall-E. Drones on basic income, with smartphones incorporated to our brains with all the corporations telling us how to live, work and think.
Seriously, this dystopia is not that far away. Just a few key ingredients for this to happen.
I upvoted you. Please do not downvote, if you have never been with someone who is seeking specialised help with anxiety issues. You simply don't realise the enormity of the problem.
I was with someone who had very very high anxiety issues. She also had ADHD and I'm sure some other disorders. She was on lexipro, lorazepam, clonazepam, diazepam, zoloft and other medications.
Thankfully I was with this person for just 1 year.
I was able to get out, but at such cost to my own mental health. Even after 6 years, I still don't have my own pieces together. It's like they say, once something has broken. You just can't put it back together the way it was.
> My best advice is to get out NOW
Best advice ever. You have my admiration if you are able to work it out and have an understanding partner. Unfortunately, I did not have an understanding partner. Even though, I moved heaven and earth to be there for her in every way, it just was not enough.
Although I should be saying, I hope she finds happiness. Except, I really feel bad for the guy she is with now. As her baggage is enormous. Instead, I hope she is getting the professional help she needs!
To the OP: I also purchased this at $10, thank you!
-------
I did a search for coupon codes and I found the exact coupon code from [1].
Can I ask, what would the problem be if the code was affiliated with an affiliate promotion?
The end user pays $10, which I think we can both agree on. It's a "NET" benefit for HN users to learn something new very cheaply.
If couponkoo negotiated with the vendor of the product, so that they can advertise a coupon and get some kick back, you know because they too have to keep the lights on.
Is that such a big deal now on HN? Can you please explain yourself because I don't see an issue here personally!
I live in the UK. I think it's really only a matter of time before they outlaw VPN or at the very least, they break the encryption so that if you do use it. They can still see what you are doing.

First they came for the Porn Sites, and I did not speak out—
Because I didn't watch Porn.
Then they came for the Torrent Sites, and I did not speak out—
Because I didn't torrent.
Then they came for the Bitcoin Sites, and I did not speak out—
Because I didn't pay with bitcoin.
Then they came for me for using VPN and there was no one left to speak for me.
About how developers should stand up and rail against their managers/CEOs when the company has asked them to build something unethical.
Where are all the developers now? That's right, underneath their desks coding away. The great ZUCK has spoken and as true CUCKs they bowed down and did his bidding.
No one on the development team is going to speak out. They need their lifestyle maintained.
The hipocrasy is not unexpected. To the world, developers will scream ethics. In private, they will cave, back to their safe spaces no doubt!
I have to somewhat disagree with this. Sure, I give the point that you can just throw more hardware at the problem of scaling. However, there are some problems that do not linear scale and rewriting gives much more of a boost.
For example. Just last year I was at a company where they had a backend product system in just under a million lines of code. I'm not going to say what language it was because I know someone will say oh it didnt scale because it's X.
In addition, it was starting to get cumbersome by having multiple developers write in it. So the agreement was to rewrite it in GO.
What was the net effect?
- Less servers, much less.
- Faster processing times, significantly more so.
- Less code cruft.
- Faster feature push.
- 1 developer let go of, saved $90k
I think all in all, they saved $150k-200 a year by switching to GO.
I know it's trendy to say, don't rewrite something in production. But seriously, if the developers agree and the business WILL BE better off with it.
> "He refused to do it but says, "there's always an engineer willing" to simply follow orders"
It's not just about that. If you are not in a first world country, then feeding your family and ensuring you have a roof over your head are more important than breaking your own ethics with developing software.
As someone who lives in a first world country, the UK. I have I found ethics to be a sliding scale.
We live in a world where gaps in the market will always be filled by someone. Frackers, Oil companys, GMO companies, Chemical companies, the list can go on and on. One side will say they are doing a public good. One other side will argue they are harming the planet and it's unethical for them to operate.
The only way to really change things, is make a movement and vote with the collective wallet. The market will dictate what is acceptable and what is not.
Per the article: I think the more programmers will adopt this attitude, companies will simply stop asking and move the project offshore. I know from experience, they have no such qualms.
> I had a similar experience earlier this year in the U.K., and the contrast was significant - in the U.K. one feels like an irritation and an inconvenience. "Bloody hell, what's a patient doing here? This is a hospital!".
I'm 50. I remember what London was like way before Labour first got into power.
Lets look at today. Immigration is way out of control. London has probably 10 million people? It's busting at the seams.
I even travel to the south near the beach. Waiting for a doctor there? Sometimes up to a month.
I can remember when I would call a doctor and be seen the next day. Not any more.
The reason for the attitude is that doctors and nurses are at breaking point. I'm sorry if the down voters don't like hearing this but it's true.
Incidentally I voted to leave. But I think it's too late. We should have left before Labour got into power with Tony Blair. Like the Democrats in the US, they wanted immigrants from all over to change the political landscape and keep them in power. Regardless of native population.
I was reading the comments of the article and I came across an interesting thought.
Whilst we in first world countries may be able to protest against our employers or try and steer them away from non-ethical actions.
What happens when the employer takes away the assignment in question and gives the work to an off-shore company, who's only obligation is to get paid? Where the developers of said off-shore company's obligation is to get paid so they can eat?
Do you think off-shore developers are going to have the same moral stances of a first world developer? I don't think so.
I know there are a couple of voices in this thread who think they can be that knight in shining armor, a bit like Don Quixote. However, you can't rail too much. Lest you find yourself outcast, side-lined or even fired?
I thought it was an interesting situation to ponder.
I really hope this comment stays up. If you downvote have the courtesy of explaining why you disagree. Especially when I am proving proof of my view point.
It's a story about the true democrats. I then task you to seriously try to debunk the content.
I ask you to rethink you viewpoint about Hillary and the Democrats. It's painfully obvious to those who have woken up. That her and her party, don't care about the American people.
The only people she cared about, was the special interests who paid her.
I think we are starting to see the period where the left blames anything and everything for the loss.
The left are so confined to their echo chamber, that they are completely out of touch with the man on the street.
I think and I could be wrong here. That people voted not for what they saw on the internet or watched on their TV screens. But for what was happening in their daily lives and what was affecting them.
They didn't need anyone to tell them what was happening. Not Obama, Hillary, The Media, Celebrities or the Internet.
If the "left" wants to win the next election cycle. How about engaging with that silent majority in a non-condescending way?
I thought it was very interesting looking at what states won.
Looking at CA and the East voting for Hillary and the rest of the country voting for Trump.
I think we should admit it. If you are rich and in tech, well of course you want to disrupt, you want to carry on that gravy train. But what about everyone else that exists? Not everyone can retrain. Even though retraining is a huge undertaking here. It's simply not going to happen.
Also protecting ones borders is not xenophobic. Are Austrialia, Switzerland, New Zealand, Canada, Japan wrong for not allowing streams of illegals in? Look at Germany. Many who voted don't want the US to become like that.
Finally, basic income. I hope we can all see this is dead. Like many other liberal dreams. I'm hoping for a new future for the US. Jobs and the end of this PC nonsense.
I do support diversity, but real diversity. Not at the expense of other people.
