Thanks for the wonderfully thought-out response. I definitely agree on the not-self-diagnose-yourself front. I'm somewhere in between your two possible reactions to such books, leaning closer to the "Whoa, whoa, whoa" one.

However, I live in Japan, where simply finding a doctor qualified and willing to diagnose someone over 20 years old is super rare. Short of expensive monthly trips to Tokyo or something just to be diagnosed, and then having a prescription that has to be received in person monthly. And the medication is highly controlled.

So I have just kinda accepted to keep applying these techniques (as well as being aware of my own created mechanisms), keep trying my best, and just live a happy life. It's been working so far!

I dunno if that is connected to ADHD, and I dunno if I have ADHD (though by reading the textbook* on it, it kinda seems I do)... but I genuinely don't remember my childhood either.

Yeah, I had a Canadian friend who was in a motorcycle accident. He could see the hospital from where he crashed. He begged the paramedics to let him walk, but they judged he should not.

He was billed 600$.

The paramedics' judgment as to whether he should or shouldn't have isn't the debate here. They likely made the safe call.

It has always been ridiculous, but getting more and more since everything much match each other perfectly. MyNumber, bank, credit card, residence card and passport... There are a few services I outright can't use because my name doesn't fit in their system, and this is after weeks of phone calls with real people. (Note, it's Rakuten iDeco I'm talking about here)

I told my elementary-age child that they can have a phone when they are old enough to sneakily buy one without me knowing.

Hmm... I think the majority of people working jobs are mostly just there "for the paychecks."

It'd be rather beautiful if all jobs were purely passion driven, but that is simply not the case. Nor could it be. And yeah, there are programmers with jobs that are mostly driven by passion, but most would pack it up and go home immediately if there was a sudden "we have stopped paying you" announcement.

They might be able to find a few retired-aged people locally, should they keep the non-automated version.

I'd walk with my CRT monitor and tower (stuffed all cables, mouse, keyboard inside) over to my friend's to play games/mess with computers a couple decades ago. We called it the "sneakernet", too.

You do you, but this "organized fun" is not for me. I completely get using tools to efficient-away the boring parts and maximize limited times and resources... but the joy of planning and traveling and taking things as they come (even with a little one) is absolutely part of the point of holidays.

I recently joined a part of a friend's holiday that was mostly planned by AI, and the most exciting parts were the when we accidentally strayed from AI's plan.

Mind you, everybody's different. I don't even like looking at reviews for restaurants; it spoils the surprise.

I'm not trying to create conflict for conflict's sake; I use AI daily for (mostly) work. Good stuff with tons of potential.

The post is well thought and put together. I hope the trip is awesome, and I'd be interested to hear your feedback of this AI plan after the trip.

Some of the health tests in Japan that elderly people take include a "standing to sitting on the floor and getting back up all unsupported" test. Scores are based on time, effort, emitted sounds (like grunts), hands-on-ground and whatnot. I don't know the specifics, but it is used as a "health measure."

I live here, but some of the online places are fairly gatekept, such as r/japanlife where non-residents can't post.

It might be worth checking out some travel discords (https://discord.gg/uwTxWekyS) or subreddits do get some initial traction?

And the Shindo system is best described as "what it feels like at the specific location"

So an earthquake can be a 4 at the epicenter, a 3 a little further away, a 2 even further away, and so on.

Common online conversation with a friend in a different prefecture may be something like, "Last night's earthquake was a 3 here, how about you?"

I've been commuting with a mirror for 5 years; it feels SO dangerous the odd time I commute with my non-mirrored mountain bike.

I don't have strava or anything. I don't even know how long my rides are, my best times, my altitude. I just go for a ride; successfully capturing the exact feeling of riding since I was a teenager.

Kei cars can comfortably go up to about 60mph. Not great for an 8 hour drive, but I regularly do 3-hour-drives with a loaded kei-van. Yep, same 660cc three-cylinder engine that those kei-trucks have. It'll hit 70mph, but not comfortably. 50mph is easy.

And on the highway, I see tons of other kei cars, too. Light weight class cars even get a toll discount!

They are talking about a much larger group of people.

By all means, it is fun to play with a language. And every person's brain works differently.

I like to use this metaphor, though. You're hiking a mountain, this journey to the "peak" is reaching some goal of fluency.

It's fun to stop and look at rocks, examining, comparing and whatnot. But it doesn't necessarily get you closer to the peak. I mean, it might, because you'll better understand your footing every-so-slightly. Not a perfect metaphor.

A creative solution! What if we rethought what "retirement savings" is and should be?
