I like this topic and often have debates with friends and family about "talent" vs "practice".
But ultimately, I feel that the answer to this is pretty obvious and boring: you need both.
For example, if you are very creative and have a great vision for a cinematic shot, but you don't know anything about how to frame and light a scene properly, your shot will suck. Inversely, if you know all the technicality but the shot in your head is bland, the actual one will be pretty technically, but bland as well.
So yeah, as with many things in life, try to be balanced I guess
I think we can all relate all to well. Even when taking all the precautions in the world, it happens eventually.
I like your little anecdote of Hemingway, and when something like that happens, I always try to think of it as a blessing in desguise, even when it's not about lost work by the way.
Everything bad that happens to me, I try to think of it as me being the protagonist of the story, and this was either an obstacle in my journey, or simply plot armor that the writer gave me to avoid making a fatal mistake.
When you take into account IDE stuff like file tree on the left, plugins on the right, or the split view when looking at a file diff, more than 80 char is too much even on a large monitor in my opinion.
