Companies have been trying to bury the mainframe for 40+ years in search of "cheaper" alternatives. Software companies, with few exceptions, have followed suit. The early implementations of "Open Systems" software on the mainframe were generally unmitigated performance disasters. It's a bit better now, but not something you'd want to bet the bank on.
