In Germany we have a clear path for those last and before last groups: apprenticeships. They are structured, widely accepted and highly respected. It seems like in the US such an alternative path is unfortunately missing (i.e. go to college or you will struggle).
Looking at the reddit thread [0] referenced in the article I am really suprised about how openly those redditors are talking about illegal drug purchases (incl. personal experiences, etc). Aren't they worried that they might be investigated?
I did an internship at Audi a few years ago and it looked exactly the same.
The one thing that was much more impressive at Audi however is that, as opposed to Tesla, where one line seems to produce one type of car, at Audi, the same line (i.e. the same robots) would sequentially work on different models. A robot might, for example, attach an A4 windshield, then a Q5 windshield, etc. That was very impressive. The required identification information (model, type, options,...) was contained on a small transmitter attached on the transporter carrying the semi-finished vehicle.
This is obviously not necessary at Tesla since they only have two models, but it was nonetheless the thing that most impressed me.
I was actually thinking about this today asking myself how often you have to tell yourself who you are until you become that person.
It's a kind of positive feedback loop. Until I started research at university I used to just do enough to pass well. When I started doing research I started enjoying it much more and consequently started working more. I became a hard-working person, both to myself and others. And this in turn led me to work even harder (also when it wasn't so enjoyable).
Same goes for other things like sports, community service, etc...
I am not exactly sure what kind of pushes you gave, but I do believe, that one should not just go with the flow. Going against the flow is what shapes you as a human being. If in doubt choose the harder option. The hard times have shaped me more as a human than the easy times.
Also a certain amount of contrast is good in life. Just going with the flow seems to dull life, removing inner conflict, conflict with others, pain, excitement...
Why? It's not Amazon's fault, but rather the decision of the publisher... And I guess it's your loss anyway. I had the same problem (I have to use amazon.de), but hey, better that than nothing!
A lot of people have commented that they do not agree because most people could not come up with Git, invent (from other ideas) modern-day MapReduce, etc.
I don't agree that the article is wrong for those reasons. Those people who invent those things are able to do so because they have spent years learning the underlying principles. And this does not only apply to programming; it applies to any scientific field. Somebody mentioned Terry Tao; well I would say that Terry Tao is a "superstar" because he has combined talent and more importantly because he has studied maths for years.
Talent + (a lot of) practice = superstar!
Look at the story of Andrew Wiles's proof of Fermats last theorem. He is undoubtedly a talented person, but was able to complete that work because he had studied math for a long time and combined the insights of many fields into his proof. Practice and talent makes a superstar!

Sure, the REQ/REQ sockets are limited, especially because they force the Request/Reply/Request/Reply/... series. I don't think any complex applications use this. I recently built an application using DEALER/ROUTER sockets, where you can send multiple requests, without having to wait for responses, etc. Additionally, no application should rely on receiving a response, the poller he suggests solves this problem nicely (although I don't think it necessary to wrap it into send/recv methods as pyzmq offers a nice polling API).
