Man, hobby electronics has come along way. Love em' or hate em' 3d printing is really adding that polish which takes things from a hack to professional looking prototype much more viable. What a time to be alive! :)
We have been swapping out duplex sfp's for single fibre working duplex sfp's for a few years on our backhaul links here. It is a great way to increase capacity. We have also rolled out a photonic switching fibre network for customers to lease 100gbit circuits across the country. Photonic switching (basically routing at the optical level) is impressive technology 1 rack can push terabits of data.
However the equipment is in the $1,000,000 range. But that is peanuts for a large carrier.
My first job was working with my father, he is a very experienced automotive mechanic. Around 30 years at the time. He taught me the same idea. "If we have done our job well, you won't notice we have been there at all", the only difference is the vehicle will now function correctly. After 5 years working with dad I moved into my the field I had studied for and I've carried that advice with me over the years. So it's not just for coding.
I would love to spend a few days there just taking it all in.
I visited Europe for the first time last year. My favorite part of the holiday was walking through the streets of the old village's in Germany and Switzerland marvelling at the history.
Here in New Zealand a 100 year old building seems ancient. So a 1,000 year old bridge was mind blowing.
We got invited to a mass in the church at the local castle in the village we stayed in, that was an unreal experience. Something I will never forget. I don't think Europeans realise how lucky they're to be so connected to there past.
Yeah, between this and the power saving bugs in the last few generations of i-core processors I'm really feeling deflated about the last 2 laptops I bought. I used an Acer c710 w/coreboot+seabios and it worked so well. Good battery life, and mostly open bios. IIRC, me blobs were compiled in to coreboot but at least it worked without disabling hardware features.
Hrmm, small world I work for a small company in NZ that used to be part of the post office, telecom and now we're privately owned. We repair Telco equipment. I am sure one of our PABX guys would be familiar with the Philips PABX. I am on the transmission team so it's not really something I would have seen. We still have a fots and rn64 though!
