Idea is that Trump would bailout AI companies and call it "job protection" or "America growth" or "national security" because they know the word 'bailout' is politically bad.

Other ideas discussed are that AI companies are going through a chain of larger and larger subsidies: VC --> Big Tech --> Governments. And that these companies haven't been able to make money off of AI so they're priming things for a bailout that's not a bailout wink wink. And that they foresee a situation where Trump will accept bribes in order to heavily regulate some AI companies but not others. Picking winners and losers.

I don't see any professionals turning to this for EMC/EMI testing, they already have all the test equipment for that job.

In my corner of the internet people started to recommend reading fiction rather than self-help. Books like the count of montecristo for example, where the characters overcome through perseverance, patience and planning.

The criticism of self-help books in my little internet bubble is that if you've read one you've read them all. So why not go for works of fiction that are time-tested and are greatly entertaining and nourishing?

It's seen as an existential threat to young people. If you can't get a job you starve.

Hallucinations are still a problem. I recently asked one to give me a quote from a book, figuring that since these AI companies have pirated all books in existence surely it can just recite a specific passage no? It hallucinated the quote, I had even told it what chapter it was in. Had I not read the book recently maybe I would've believed the hallucinated quote.

And it got me thinking, they sell these AIs as assistants, but it couldn't even look up a passage from a book. This is basic, elementary stuff, it should get it right. I would have fired this assistant right away if it were a person. Not only did it get it totally wrong, it came to me with utmost confidence that this is the quote from the book. Unreliable assistants? That's the product they're trying to sell? Get out of here with that trash. I can't trust it.

Freecad never really clicked with me. Tried it most recently in 2023 and the user experience just didn't make sense to me. My impression was that freecad is one of those projects were things have been a certain way for a long time (UX/UI wise I mean) and it works for those people so it will never change. For my small cad usage I just went with onshape.

"To carry out the scheme, SMITH created hundreds of thousands of songs with artificial intelligence and used automated programs called “bots” to fraudulently stream his AI-generated songs billions of times, in an effort to mimic the genuine streaming activity of real consumers. SMITH pled guilty today to conspiracy to commit wire fraud before U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl."

He made $8 million from royalties which he agreed to pay back.

From what I've read, gold was being bought as trust in the dollar was falling and also as a hedge against inflation. I haven't seen anything in the world recently that convinces me that inflation is going down and that trust in the US govt is recovering.

So I am confused as to why the precious metals have sold off so aggressively. I see there's a private credit problem going on too, wonder if they're related and part of the sell off is due to investors being forced to sell what they can (gold) as opposed to what they want to sell (private credit investments)

We keep going down the wrong direction. We need more energy self-sufficiency. More investment in solar and wind.

Would love to see a quick video demo showcasing the features, look and feel of the software. The same team made horizon eda, and I wasn't able to find videos on youtube about it that were newer than 2022, so I never gave it a shot either.

You are one lazy bastard.

Your current level of engagement and proactive contribution doesn't quite align with our high-performance culture and operational excellence standards.

Are other states building all this manufacturing/semiconductor capacity? I think it's an overall USA thing, we just don't do manufacturing anymore because it's cheaper to do it in another country.

Not sure what the point of the website is. To me it looks like a bad faith argument. The secular trend in the US has been to increase margins by moving manufacturing to other countries.

The tariffs are certainly not making it easier to manufacture domestically.

I bought a thinkpad X1 carbon refurbished for about ~$300. I wanted to travel abroad with a laptop I wouldn't mind getting stolen if it happened. During the installation of Win11 it asked me to create a microsoft account, fuck that. I installed linux mint. Very nice experience overall, so nice to not get assaulted by ads in the start menu. Pleased to see the nightlight functionality (I googled f.lux for linux and that's how I discovered it) is built-in, and with flatpack I installed vlc, qbittorrent and obsidian. Firefox setup was straightforward. And that was it. This is a laptop for youtube and movies, I used the pre-installed libre office calc for small budget things and list making. It just worked for me.

The things that bother me about this laptop are primarily hardware related coming from using a mac laptop (which is the laptop I would mind getting stolen). Trackpad on X1 carbon is definitely not as good, battery life not as good. And opening the lid momentarily reveals what you were on before the lock screen comes on. This last one tastes more like a software issue. I had another issue with the hdmi port being finicky, but that's hardware again.

Overall very happy with this setup, linux mint is in great shape. I do wish there were fewer distro choices for people considering making the switch. It does introduce choice paralysis. I had to set aside my ego and pipe dream aspirations of being a "hacker" and went with a distro that seemed to be simple and straightforward to setup. Mint definitely is easier to install than windows, hands down, no need to create a microsoft account and you don't have to deal with all the slop features it tries to shove down your throat.

Yeah there's lots of complaining but until they move to linux, stop buying their games and cancel their subscriptions nothing will change in the enshittification path.

Amen brother! And the work-life conditions are also much better in software. I remember in grad school an executive from a big semiconductor company (I think it was ON semi) was complaining to the EE department that most students are now pursuing EE as a CS degree and very few went into hardware so they claimed the talent pool was small.

How about paying more then?

Show me the incentive and I'll show you the outcome.

When I interviewed at intel the position they were offering was to be the "owner" of a tool and I'd be on call.... Yeah no thanks, I get a PhD just to be owned by some company?

How is boston dynamics doing? They do very cool stuff but it feels like they struggle commercializing their technology. I remember they were once bought by google I think? And then spat out...
