I have no problem with call center worker with accents, I have a problem with call centers that are basically a human reading me an FAQ with no power to solve my problem. They have basically become heatsinks for frustration, not a way to get help.
Helps with salary gaps within those countries, but salaries are still laughable compared to US software engineering salaries. Does anyone know why that is?
We should switch, not because it raises or maintains productivity, but because it's the right thing to do. Framing the debate in terms of productivity plays into the hands of those who would maintain the status quo. If laborers were properly organized, we could dictate the 4-day or 3-day workweek,
This does seem to be where the US government is heading: Conservatives are doing everything they can to destroy federal power so they can create communities around traditional values (or just exploit deregulation to socialize the costs of getting rich), which leaves local governments to step into the void. When you take the idea much further, there are a lot of troubling implications:
Who has power in the areas between the cities? What rights do urbanites have outside their city and who upholds those rights? How do we avoid rural areas devolving into economic wastelands or being exploited by monied interests in the cities? What criminal code could we agree on on a large scale and who enforces it? How can a rural community control access to abortion (for example), when such a service is a short drive away? Would the difference in wealth and opportunity just create a permanent rural underclass without redistributive social policies to offset it? How would a city state respond to something like wage slavery on its doorstep? Who pays for and protects federal lands, parks, and the commons? Who feeds the city? How do cities defend themselves?
I don't think it matters how much better Windows hardware is, or how far along the Linux subsystem gets, I only feel at home in a *nix OS. The best UX/most stable is MacOS, and it doesn't hurt that I can run Photoshop, Sketch, etc.
Eh-- work in tech in Norway and our female engineers definitely feel outnumbered and sometimes avoid outings unless another woman will be there. That's in egalitarian Scandinavia.
I literally just came back from grabbing a package at an Amazon locker in Italy (this exact concept, except it's been around for a couple of months now). It was convenient and beats the really unreliable parcel services here.
This article is long-winded, pretentious and misses Kingsley Amis' best definition of the metaphysical hangover:
> When that ineffable compound of depression, sadness (these two are not the same), anxiety, self-hatred, sense of failure and fear for the future begins to steal over you, start telling yourself that what you have is a hangover. You are not sickening for anything, you have not suffered a minor brain lesion, you are not all that bad at your job, your family and friends are not leagued in a conspiracy of barely maintained silence about what a shit you are, you have not come at last to see life as it really is and there is no use crying over spilt milk.
I always thought this on Windows-- the Linux subsystem is weak and I won't be happy with it until Windows is developed on a UNIX kernel, i.e., never. So then I switch to some distro with Gnome3 because it's cool and that's where the problems start.
HiDPI support has been garbage for at least 2 years. I'll get scaling and resolutions right for my XPS13 QHD, and then I'll plug in a 1080 monitor and it goes back to looking like crap. The sound goes out unless I cold boot twice. Then I need to use Wine to run Photoshop in a barely legible font size because hidpi scaling won't work. God help you if you want to manually configure your display manager, as you'll end up with an unusable display and hours of SO on your hands.
That's not to mention the ton of visual and "feel" issues behind using even Pantheon/eOS, which feels like a fork of OS 10.5.
I recently built my own hackintosh and am quite happy with it. I do all my work on the Mac with integrated graphics (don't need a GPU, which is great because the Nvidia web drivers are indeed terrible) and switch to Windows for games. Couldn't be more pleased.
