If only a standard existed to do this... Hint: it exists since ages in Italy and it has been extended to Europe recently (See Registered Electronic Mail - RFC 6109 and ETSI EN 319 532 – 4)
I built and maintain internal and external web services at the shipping agent I work for (agent for one of the top container carriers) and I released my edifact Library on GitHub if you need you can find my email there, although it's all php so it may not be glamorous enough for HN crowd.
Also advice on standards as I seat in some industry working groups
