A glance at political contributions of Twitter employees at 99.7% to one party gives you a very strong prior in what the political leaning of random Twitter employees to be.

Sure. The Oversight Board. Facebook did exactly this years ago.

FB shut down facial recognition last year. I'm waiting to see other companies follow suit. Apple?

Wonder what bubble you're in, I've been seeing a Facebook attack article easily 3-4 times a month for the last three years. I want to see Bytedance's CEO in front of Congress.

Whereas anti TikTok is a recent (and much needed) development. That app is fast tracking through every single pitfall Facebook hit, starting with making users' attention spans less than five seconds, filtering out content based on beauty, giving schoolchildren tics, and all the trust and safety issues.

The more basic explanation is that she has been served ads for puzzles like that for a while, based on previous history and maybe retargeting from the company and you guys only notice the ad because it's more salient after sending a message with the puzzle in it.

There's no reason you'd have noticed an ad about the puzzle in the wash of content and other types of ads.

As if the history of the dollars used is relevant. Chase money far enough and 90% of US bills have some trace of cocaine. Should we avoid any and all donations because it's drug money?

It's actually really interesting that you mentioned physics and math - I used to typeset my lecture notes in LaTeX and I found it more effective to do it for exactly the same reasons you mentioned. The time it took to typeset equations forced me to figure out what those equations were saying.

I suspect it's time to digest the concepts and when it's slower to handwrite versus type that results in better comprehension.

And the pendulum has swung so far back I can recall reading "diversity" advocates trying to remove them in the last few years for being insufficiently equitable.

Yes, and E2EE was rolled out in 2016 to Messenger, and then was planned to be the default until regulators and NCMEC started screaming about CSAM, and rightly so. It's lose lose.

This is what happens when you encourage high achievement and select for it. It's not a model that's going to work everywhere.

It certainly helps that he develops an accelerated program but the effect of that program versus the selection process is the most important question of all.

Corrections get a tiny single digit fraction of the views of the original. There is no button to make sure everyone who saw the original sees the correction, assuming one is made.

All you need is a few other places making the same claim, sourced to NYT, and only the people that care enough will even click through to read the source. NYT isn't putting corrections on headline news for the same visibility as the nice fresh off the press article.

While I like the annotations, I have to say they make it difficult to make out the original equation. It parses and highlights variables and gets in the way of seeing a cohesive whole equation.

I think an annotated version would be good as a supplement.

Even if change is led by groups (and I suspect it's not so clear cut), groups need leaders or you have mobs.

I'm getting tired of articles that look to tear something down without offering a replacement.

Plastic Love doesn't quite serve your point, it's just they released the MV after literally decades, and nostalgia is handy for engagement.

Granted I do see that YT has the same issues. I don't think its easy to manipulate, but all recommendation systems are going to have people trying to manipulate it.

I hazard a guess it's the PR campaign. YouTube Kids does not look like it's anywhere near successful as it should be yet they didn't get article after article yelling at them like Instagram did.

But people don't like new material.

The top comment mentions people hiding posts from pages they don't follow - alternatively, that's called showing brand new content you haven't seen before.

Opposing material suggests a binary, sure that makes some sense in a US centric political spectrum, but what's the opposing viewpoint to my friends photo from hiking last weekend?

Geographically nearby could mean my neighbor 5 doors down who I don't know anything about and am not friends with. Do you think, if she were a privacy-concerned individual like many people on HN are, she'd be happy to know I saw her post about her new flowers?

It's less narrative control and more human condition - if anything I'm glad they tried this experiment. Chronological feeds are how you end up with news teams spamming posts every three minutes, and you having to hit the hide button every time.
