I like this, I’ve been tracking with MyFitnessPal. Would be great if I could import historical calories to see how it performs. Also note that tracking calories is hard - often it’s an estimate so quite hard to vary by the small amounts above and below the threshold needed for continued weight loss. Also losing weight is hard!

Worth mentioning Gene Wolfe’s superb Latro books (https://www.goodreads.com/series/49453-latro)

I think the premise for the books is that the story is found on ancient papyrus.

Which reminds me of a weekend I took a few years ago where we drove to Edinburgh from Manchester on day 1 then up to Arisaig on day 2 to camp on the beach - then back to Edinburgh for a wedding on day 3 and then back to Arisaig the next day to continue the long weekend. Then full day drive back to Manchester.

The uk government development service as you call it is not a service. It’s more of a declaration of process that is adhered to across diverse departments and organisations that make up the government. It’s usually small teams that are responsible for exploring what a service is or needs and then implementing it. They are able to deliver decent services because they start small, design and user test iteratively and only when there is a really good understanding of what’s being delivered do they scale out. The technology is the easy bit.

And now imagine the future where code is embedded in the world all around. No one knows it’s there, except… the magicians! They’re the only ones who managed to RTFM before it was lost in the mists of time…

I have visited 2x - Once recently and it was very impressive. But I also climbed the towers in a thunder storm in 1990. Which was a terrifying experience. The stairs had about 50cm of stone balustrade on the inside which was not enough to feel safe. I was on my hands and knees by the very top. It was either real or vertigo but I swear I could feel the tower sway as the lightening and thunder crashed all around. A most treasured experience

Sounds like consumers need AI identities to help them get the best deals from this kind of thing.

Just found out about this by looking into why I get dizzy when I swim crawl in the sea! The body is truly a complicated and wonderful thing.

Slightly tangential but along the same lines. Worth a read, BlackBerry Wine by Joanne Harris. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackberry_Wine

I’m sure lots of people in the UK would like to believe that a summer like this is the ‘new normal’. But I can attest to the fact that the last time temperatures and rainfall were like this in the UK was in 1995 and before that 1976 (which I don’t quite remember, but I was there)
